TRICHY (Tamil Nadu) :<br />
Woraiyur, a part <strong>of</strong> present day<br />
Tiruchirappalli, has been the capital city <strong>of</strong><br />
Cholas since 300 B.C. Pure silk varieties<br />
with good amount <strong>of</strong> ornamentation were<br />
used for dressing the kings, their kin and<br />
the rich in the Jayankondam area, situated<br />
about 95 Kms from Trichy. The main<br />
product <strong>of</strong> the cluster is Woraiyur Cotton<br />
Sarees, Dhotis, and Voile Fabric. About<br />
70% <strong>of</strong> the production is that <strong>of</strong> sarees<br />
in various counts namely 60s, 80s, 100s,<br />
120s, 2/120s. The yearly production <strong>of</strong><br />
these cotton sarees are 3 lakhs pieces<br />
which is 5% <strong>of</strong> the Tamil Nadu’s handloom<br />
saree production. The handloom products<br />
are manufactured in and around Trichy<br />
in various locations namely Manamedu,<br />
Musiri, Thathingarpet, Mettupalayam,<br />
Trichy, Poovalur, Thuraiyur, Kottathur and<br />
Paithampari areas.<br />
Highlights<br />
= Created awareness among 2700<br />
weavers & SHG members through 11<br />
awareness meetings. The weavers<br />
were explained about the objects<br />
<strong>of</strong> the IHCDP and voiced their<br />
problems.<br />
= 56 SHGs formed so far (16 by us<br />
and 40 by the NGO), 4 SHGs got<br />
Rs. 60,000/- each as RF loan and 2<br />
SHGs got Rs. 3 lakhs<br />
= 232 SHG women weavers <strong>of</strong><br />
Manamedu, Trichy and Poovalur<br />
areas trained in eight batches on<br />
Hand Embroidery for value additions<br />
on fabrics<br />
= 590 weavers trained in Handloom<br />
Jacquard Saree Weaving, Hand<br />
Embroidery Training, Pure Silk<br />
Handloom Weaving and Garments<br />
and Made ups manufacturing.<br />
= 150 handloom weavers switched over<br />
from cotton saree / voile weving to<br />
pure silk weaving to pure silk weaving<br />
and their earnings improved to the<br />
range <strong>of</strong> Rs. 3000/- - 5000/- from a<br />
mere Rs. 1000 – 1500/- range.<br />
= 50 handloom weavers switched over<br />
from cotton saree / voile weaving to<br />
cotton dhothy weaving and earnings<br />
improved to the range <strong>of</strong> Rs. 2000 –<br />
3000/- from a mere Rs. 1000 – 1500/-<br />
range.<br />
= Rs. 39 lakhs worth goods sold (Rs.<br />
5 lakhs to exporters, Rs. 1.5 lakhs<br />
to handloom house, Rs. 30 lakhs<br />
to local supplies Rs. 3.5 lakhs retail<br />
sales)<br />
= Rs. 300 lakhs worth sarees supplied<br />
to Co-op Tex since the beginning <strong>of</strong><br />
the programme.<br />
= Rs. 300.58 lakhs (60 cycles) worth<br />
raw material cotton yarn supplied<br />
to societies and other stakeholders<br />
through the Cluster Yarn Sales<br />
Depot.<br />
= Manamedu Handloom Tex<br />
Consortium Producer Company Ltd<br />
is registered under companies Act,<br />
1956 for executing the Project <strong>of</strong><br />
Dye House in the cluster. 2 acres <strong>of</strong><br />
land purchased by the company and<br />
got registered. One more land <strong>of</strong> 70<br />
cents purchased and registered for<br />
Dye House.<br />
