Methodology <strong>of</strong> the study<br />

To accomplish overall <strong>and</strong> <strong>specific</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> this research a qualitative<br />

approach w<strong>as</strong> chosen that allowed a complex <strong>and</strong> comprehensive analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>specific</strong> <strong>needs</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>children</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>elderly</strong> <strong>left</strong> <strong>behind</strong>. Research tools <strong>and</strong><br />

methods that were applied include:<br />

(i) In-depth individual interview. Conducted were:<br />

- 29 in-depth individual interviews with <strong>children</strong> deprived <strong>of</strong> parental<br />

care (see Annex 1),<br />

- 26 in-depth individual interviews with the <strong>elderly</strong> deprived <strong>of</strong> their<br />

family members’ care (see Annex 2),<br />

- 10 interviews with representatives <strong>of</strong> CPA (Ministry <strong>of</strong> Labour, Social<br />

Protection <strong>and</strong> Family, Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education, Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health, National<br />

Employment Agency) (see Annex 3);<br />

(ii) focus-group discussion. Were held:<br />

- Four focus-groups discussions with <strong>children</strong> (mixed groups including<br />

<strong>children</strong> <strong>left</strong> <strong>behind</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>children</strong> whose parents are at home) (see<br />

Annex 4);<br />

- Four focus-groups discussions with the <strong>elderly</strong> <strong>left</strong> <strong>behind</strong> (two focus<br />

group discussions with the <strong>elderly</strong> who live in the community <strong>and</strong> two<br />

focus group discussions with the <strong>elderly</strong> placed in the <strong>as</strong>ylum) (see<br />

Annex 5);<br />

- Two focus-groups with community child protection specialists (kindergarten<br />

<strong>and</strong> school teachers, psychologists, family doctors, social<br />

workers, police <strong>of</strong>ficers, etc.);<br />

- Two focus-groups discussions with specialists working in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>elderly</strong> protection <strong>and</strong> care (social workers, social <strong>as</strong>sistant workers,<br />

family doctors, etc.) (see Annex 6);<br />

(iii) c<strong>as</strong>e study to present some particular situations related to <strong>children</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>elderly</strong> <strong>left</strong> <strong>behind</strong> <strong>as</strong> a consequence <strong>of</strong> migration identified in the<br />

community;<br />

(iv) free writing. This technique w<strong>as</strong> used in the c<strong>as</strong>e <strong>of</strong> 22 <strong>children</strong> <strong>left</strong><br />

<strong>behind</strong> <strong>as</strong> a consequence <strong>of</strong> migration in the community, 40 <strong>children</strong><br />

placed in residential institutions <strong>and</strong> 10 <strong>children</strong> from temporary placement<br />

centres;<br />

(v) drawing. The drawing technique w<strong>as</strong> applied for <strong>children</strong> <strong>of</strong> a young<br />

age (six-nine years old) for the purpose <strong>of</strong> finding out different <strong>as</strong>pects<br />

related to the life <strong>of</strong> <strong>children</strong> <strong>left</strong> <strong>behind</strong> after parents’ migration abroad<br />

for work.<br />
