ealized that <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Congregational had much in common in terms <strong>of</strong>government <strong>and</strong> true worship <strong>of</strong> God. There were discussions between <strong>the</strong> churches <strong>and</strong>application to parliament for <strong>the</strong>m to join forces <strong>and</strong> to function as one organization.This did not take place until 1972 when parliament agreed that <strong>the</strong> rules could be changed.Both Churches amalgamated as <strong>the</strong> United Reform Church (URC)The documented sources such as Cormick (1998) correlate with some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrative <strong>of</strong>this respondent.The racial composition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> URC congregation studied is about half white <strong>and</strong> half Black(African <strong>and</strong> Caribbean origin); <strong>the</strong>re are three young people under <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 30 yrs (12-20yrs) who attend regularly with <strong>the</strong>ir parents. The active membership is about 30 between<strong>the</strong> ages <strong>of</strong> 12-100+. There is an inactive membership where <strong>the</strong> children that have beenbaptized as babies but have not been confirmed <strong>and</strong> brought <strong>into</strong> membership.The church is situated in an urban district in London neighbouring that where COGIC issituated. The building church seats about a hundred people <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is also a church hallwhere also non-URC activities take place. The number <strong>of</strong> people attending church serviceson Sundays changes every week, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> number attending <strong>the</strong> weekly Tuesday meetingsranges from 6-8 weekly. The majority who attend <strong>the</strong> regular Tuesday meetings are elderlywomen. The music consists <strong>of</strong> a CD player that plays hymns throughout <strong>the</strong> session.During <strong>the</strong> discussion <strong>the</strong> music is turned down very low or turned <strong>of</strong>f completely. Thebuilding is not in <strong>the</strong> traditional form <strong>of</strong> a church building. The main church has two roomsat <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pulpit to <strong>the</strong> left <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> right. The room to <strong>the</strong> left is <strong>the</strong> vestry <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>room to <strong>the</strong> right is <strong>the</strong> kitchen. In <strong>the</strong> church, <strong>the</strong>re is a large table (<strong>the</strong> communion table)to <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pulpit/rostrum <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> baptismal bowl is between <strong>the</strong> pulpit <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>131
