Some will care more than o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong>many people have responsibility for care that resembles pastoral care in <strong>the</strong>ir day to dayoccupation, be this paid or voluntary work. O<strong>the</strong>rs such as nurses, doctors, human resourcemanagers have this as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir paid employment. The minister is responsible fordelegating his role <strong>and</strong> function to appropriately appointed persons as elders, deacons,evangelists, prayer leaders <strong>and</strong> missionaries.The picture painted by Clebsch <strong>and</strong> Jaekle (1983) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main areas <strong>of</strong> pastoral functionhave similarities to secular discussions <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional functions that encourage <strong>and</strong>support people to develop intellectually <strong>and</strong> emotionally in <strong>the</strong> caring organizations such asteaching, nursing traditional <strong>and</strong> complementary medicine <strong>and</strong> social work. Coleman (2006) classifies <strong>the</strong> emotional intelligence as self awareness, selfregulation <strong>and</strong> self motivation <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> social intelligence as social awareness, empathy <strong>and</strong>social skills. Empathy crosses over <strong>the</strong> boundaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> emotional <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> social <strong>and</strong> ringsthrough with <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> healer to be protected against becoming ill with <strong>the</strong>condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person who is being healed.The pastor/minister is also expected to have a well developed emotional intelligence,emotional maturity <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> social intelligence to be an effective church leader.
