The minister will often focus onprayer and healing for an officer who is not operating in their office and who has notformally informed the committee of their intentions.In COGIC people enter into membership by being first baptised, (from about the age ofnine) and then applying for membership of the congregation. People who have beenbaptised or are members of other churches can transfer that membership, if approved, intothe congregation. The URC has a very similar system, except that people may be“baptised” as babies, but only apply for membership from about the age of eight.In addition to being baptized and coached into membership, new COGIC members are alsoexpected to have a period of training and induction into the church for some years beforebeing accepted as an elder, healer, evangelist or missionary in the local church as well asthe wider church.The procedures for becoming a member are similar in both churches. There is usually oneto one counselling and teaching in the doctrine of the church, followed by a church servicewhere the person is received into membership. The person is asked questions by theminister in a public service and makes a declaration that they accept the teaching of thechurch. They are then welcomed into the church by shaking of their right hand. They havenow received the right hand of fellowship. This marks their change from being a nonmember to being a member. As a member they can vote on issues relating to thegovernment of the church. Church meeting are public meetings; however non-memberscan attend the meeting and give their opinion, but cannot vote on issues. For example, anon-member who is working on a church project may attend the church meeting and report141
on the project and make requests to the church, but will not be able to participate in thedecision as to whether the project continues.Membership in COGIC uses the same process of counselling and the right hand offellowship. However, only people over the age of nine years who have been baptized andcounselled into membership are allowed to participate. Young children are dedicated andonly baptized by full immersion in water when they reach the age of accountability, theyoungest being eight or nine years. Full church membership allows the person toparticipate in Communion in URC and communion and washing of the feet in COGIC.Serving supper (communion) and washing of the feet takes place on the third Sunday in themonth in COGIC. The Pentecostal church engages in the ritual practice of serving theLord‟s Supper and washing of the saints‟ feet in the same way that Jesus served supper tohis disciples, whilst the URC serve communion without the ritual of washing the feet. Onoccasions when there is a visiting speaker the order of the service may change toaccommodate the speaker on the instruction of the Pastor. Healing through humility isencouraged through the act of washing another person‟s feet.These churches‟ attitudes to the practices of healing have to be set in the context of thewhole structure of the social construction and reproduction of their social and physicalenvironment. Healing services are learnt behaviour. The courses offered by bothcongregations‟ denominations at their ministerial training courses include modules onhealing although it is not compulsory for students who successfully complete these coursesto practise healing. COGIC Bible College is advertised as COGIC Theological Seminarythrough a website where there is a resumé of the courses on offer, but no contact personsuch as a Principal or Director.
