principles to judge the validity and usefulness of qualitative date in terms of whether theaccounts from the respondents fit the information from the literature on the churchdoctrine. The principles are:i) to assume initially that no one is lyingii) in choosing between the individual story and the official version it is most likely that theinstitution is not being totally honestiii) whatever people tell you makes sense to them as it is part of their life experiences, realor imagined.iv) all the information gathered from people‟s account is relevant if it is within the domainof the research topic.v) there is no such thing as absolute truth.One issue of truth here is about whether the respondents really understand the doctrine andpractices of their church, and want to give the researcher the information that they think theresearcher is looking for, or whether they feel it is important that they protect the church asan organization and others in the organization especially those in senior positions by nottelling the whole story. Their individual experiences of spiritual healing may be real tothem as this is part of their life experiences and their accounts are therefore reliablealthough they may not be valid as quantitative data about clinical health outcomes. It couldbe argued, however, that if the information from the interviews and observation is reliableis it also valid in as much as ethnographic and qualitative data can be reliable and valid atthe time given the social setting that prevails at that time in history.79
It may not be possible for all the outcomes and interpretation of this kind of qualitativestudy to be reliable. The data could, however, form the basis of future studies and thereforeprovide the foundation for ongoing studies in the research field.This study highlights some of the reasons for this paucity of information and literature asthe resistance of the Black Pentecostal community to engage in research and to writebecause the tradition is that their history is primarily an oral one in that information ispassed from one generation to the next through word of mouth. Unfortunately the numbersof people in the community who will have some insight into the history of the Pentecostalchurch are few. Although there is a strong belief that education and learning is important,many of the older generation become typecast in their negative (sometimes jealous)attitude towards the education which was denied to them. As a consequence of this theyview education as a privilege for the elite. In addition to this education costs money andmoney is limited to those who are in low paid jobs and the majority have spent most oftheir lives working in lower paid jobs. Research to these people is like a foreign languageand only the researcher and those in the academic field can decide on the reliability of thedata that is collected and the methods used to analyze such data.Understanding spiritual healing requires a certain amount of commitment from the personwho delivers healing as well as the recipient. Researching the topic also requires a certainlevel of commitment, appropriate academic personnel and an environment that isconducive to such study. The validity and reliability of the methodology is thereforedependent on the academic rigour that is applied to the data collection and the data analysismethods. Neither the researcher nor the respondents can be deemed to know enough aboutthe organization at the beginning of the research; therefore the purpose of the research is to80
