higher academic learning by obtaining the certification
of its post-graduate specialty training programme in
psychiatry and psychotherapy by the German Association
for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (Deutsche Gesellschaft
für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, DGPPN), in close
coordination with the European Union of Medical Specialists
(UEMS) in March 2010. Additional measures will serve to
stimulate the scientific activities of young medical doctors in
psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as in psychosomatic
medicine and psychotherapy through specially designated
training curricula, creating incentives for original research
studies. In this area, too, the LVR-Klinikum will align its own
programmes with the targets and development schedules
of the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich-Heine University,
particularly in the field of neuroscience. It is not for nothing
that the expression “the decade of psychiatric disorders” is
already making the rounds in international publications: the
rapidly increasing knowledge about the aetiopathogenetic
causes of mental illnesses in the context of interactions
between genes and the environment will generate the type

PREFACE
of progress that will not only change the existing medical
concepts but also – and particularly so – improve diagnostic,
therapeutic-rehabilitative and preventive instruments,
ultimately with a corresponding impact on the healthcare
structures required to provide the services that have entered
our reach.
Healthcare, research and academic teaching in all the
various fields of medicine will face a large number and
variety of challenges. These challenges must be accepted
and turned into opportunities in order to improve psychiatric
diagnostics, treatment and healthcare for people with
mental disorders – on a local, regional, national and
international scale. This report for the period 2001–2009
shows that the LVR-Klinikum – Hospital of the Heinrich-
Heine University Düsseldorf is properly equipped and well
poised to meet these challenges.
