2.2.5 Cross-divisional units
Centre for Diagnostics
Many diagnostic examinations are performed at the
hospital and subsequently processed and evaluated inhouse,
including clinical-chemical laboratory tests,
electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials,
neurography, electromyography, electrocardiography, sleep
laboratory and sonography of the blood vessels supplying
the brain. Imaging procedures (computer tomography,
magnetic resonance tomography and positron emission
tomography) are performed in close cooperation with
the Sana Hospital at Gerresheim, the University Hospital
Düsseldorf and the Research Centre at Jülich.
Clinical Chemistry Unit
Director: W, Gaebel, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and
Psychotherapy, H. Quadbeck, MD (until September 2008)
This unit carries out all clinical-chemical laboratory tests
that may be required, including blood level analyses of
prescription drugs, which may be of crucial importance for
therapeutic decisions. Occasionally, this unit is supported by
a specialised laboratory in Cologne.
Psychophysiology Unit
Directors: J. Zielasek, MD, Senior Lecturer in Neurology

The hospital is equipped with three digital
electroencephalography (EEG) recording devices

and one analogue device and a sleep laboratory.
Electrocardiography (ECG) equipment is available
throughout the hospital. The unit performs and evaluates
about 2,000 electroencephalograms and more than 6,000
electrocardiograms per year. The EEG recordings comply
with the guidelines of the German Society for Clinical
Neurophysiology (duration: 20 minutes with hyperventilation
and photostimulation). Results are generally provided on the
day of the examination.
Psychological tests/neuropsychological diagnoses

A wide range of psychological test methods is applied by
both the inpatient and the outpatient units, which record
(premorbid and current) cognitive functions, personality
structures, different aspects and levels of severity of mental
disorders and their impact on performance and overall
personality. In the course of the treatment, it therefore
becomes possible to promptly detect, measure and describe
improvements as well as deteriorations.
Psychological tests are conducted to establish levels of
performance and to diagnose patients, but also in the
course of clinical studies, post-marketing phase IV studies,
comparisons between therapies and other research projects
that have not been quantitatively recorded.
