situation. Such strategies include:
s Comprehensive diagnostics of child and adolescent
psychiatric disorders
s Comprehensive psychological diagnostics (learning
and performance abilities, emotional behaviour)
s Individualised therapy, either psychodynamic or
cognitive-behaviour therapy depending on the nature of
the disorder
s Involvement of the domestic environment (e.g., family,
home, school) with systemic/interactive therapy options
or intensive counselling
s Different group therapy options (such as social skills
training, skills training according to the concept of
dialectical behaviour therapy, anti-aggression training,
group sessions for parents and children with ADHS
issues, additional parent groups, etc.)
s Music/creative therapy, individual or group sessions
s Mental and physical exercise techniques (autogenic
training, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga)

Psychiatry treats patients
aged between 5 and 18
s Social and educational care (following the concept of
the “primary carer”), various social care options for
individuals and groups
Day Care and Outpatient Unit
The Day Care Unit, established in 1986 and extended to its
present size in 2007, comprises two wards with eight places
each for children and adolescents. All known disorders
in child and adolescent psychiatry can be treated here.
Treatment strategies are tailored to the young patients’
and their families’ individual needs, with psychosocial
reintegration being a high priority.
It is planned to establish another Day Care Unit with twelve
beds in Hilden (Mettmann County).
The outpatient ward can give appointments at short notice
to parents and their children or adolescents who are
suffering from mental disorders. It specialises in outpatient
diagnostics, the outpatient treatment of emotionally unstable
young people (following the tenets of dialectical behaviour
