medical supervision and is complemented, if required, by one-on-one
interviews with the doctor and psychological diagnostics. Depending on the
individual indication, ergotherapy and physiotherapy may also be used.
Alcohol dependence and drug dependence –
treatment of people with comorbidity
The primary indication for admission is comorbidity of a dependence
disorder with depression or anxiety. One objective of therapy is to encourage
the individual to undergo further measures such as psychoeducational group
therapy sessions, under medical supervision, on depression and anxiety.
Institutional Outpatient Unit
The Institutional Outpatient Unit has designed its range of services in
dependence psychiatry and psychotherapy mainly for people who have just
completed inpatient treatment, aiming to secure the longer-term success of
their treatment. The specific services offered include the following:
Diagnosis and therapy for people suffering from dependence disorders and
concomitant mental disorders (such as anxiety and depression), possibly
including drug treatment
s Group-therapy–based behaviour therapy and psychoeducation
s In individual cases: outpatient detoxification treatment (only for mild
withdrawal symptoms that do not require inpatient treatment)
s In individual cases and to support psychiatric-psychotherapeutic
treatment: subsequent to inpatient treatment, follow-up treatment with
recognised drugs for relapse prevention
• for people with alcohol dependence (e.g., acamprosate)
• for people with opiate dependence (naltrexone)
s Consultations and group sessions for consumers of cannabis and other
so-called “party drugs”
s Group sessions for non-substance dependence (such as Internet
surfing, gambling, shopping)
s Outpatient nicotine withdrawal
s Information groups for family members, offered by the social services
s Consultations offered by the social services for people from the

Klinikum Düsseldorf (primarily for patients with a chronic dependence
and cognitive disorders)
