Responsibilities and Range of Services
The LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf – Hospital of the Heinrich-
Heine University Düsseldorf), operated by the
Landschaftsverband Rhineland (LVR, a public regional body),
fulfils two roles simultaneously: it is a hospital for patients
who require mental healthcare, psychosomatic healthcare or
psycho therapy, and it is a university hospital with academic
departments of psychiatry and psychotherapy (Chair: W.
Gaebel, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, since
1992) and psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy (Chair:
W. Tress, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychosomatic Medicine and
Psychotherapy, since 1989). The LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf is
thus a provider of healthcare as well as a university hospital
with responsibilities in research and academic teaching.
Established in 1876 as the “Provinzial-Heil- und Pflegeanstalt

Grafenberg” under Carl Pelmann (1876–1989), the hospital
– then headed by Josef Peretti – became associated in 1907
with the “Akademie für Praktische Medizin”, in 1923 with the
Medical Academy and in 1965 with the Medical Faculty of the
University Düsseldorf (renamed Heinrich-Heine University
Düsseldorf in 1988). In 1923, Franz Sioli (1923-1947) became
the first Full Professor for Psychiatry. He was followed in this
Chair by Gustav Störring (1949–1953), Friedrich Panse (1955–
1967), Casper Kulenkampff (1967–1971) and Kurt Heinrich
(1972–1992). In 1977, Annelise Heigl-Evers (1977–1989)
received the first Full Professorship for Psychotherapeutic
Medicine and Psychotherapy. In 2001 a comprehensive
account of the first 125 years of the hospital was published by
Gaebel, Heinlein and Maas on the occasion of its anniversary1 .
