of our efforts to attract third-party funding. Successful
structures must be protected and developed. This also
applies to the structures of the Competence Network on
Schizophrenia, funded by the German Federal Ministry
for Education and Research, for which another period of
financial assistance has been secured. By establishing a
Chair of Experimental Psychopathology, the scientific and
coordinative requirements for a sustainable development
have been provided. The Competence Network, meanwhile,
has started to host a regular European Schizophrenia
Congress (every other year), and the establishment of a
European Schizophrenia Society appears imminent. As soon
as possible, a suitable candidate needs to be found to occupy
the currently vacant W2 chair (specialisation: imaging
techniques). The scientific cooperation with the WHO must
be further expanded, with the agreed objective of obtaining
accreditation as a WHO Collaborating Centre.
In the field of academic teaching, there is active cooperation
with the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich-Heine University in

implementing the “Curriculum 2011” initiative, a large-scale
project to reform and optimise the teaching and training of
medical students.
Within the next few years, organisational and physical
restructuring plans will continuously be implemented.
Right now, the LVR-Klinikum is planning a new Centre for
Neurology and Neuropsychiatry at the Bergische Landstraße
site. The new centre will be operated in close cooperation
with the Department of Neurology of the University Hospital
Düsseldorf and will be dedicated to the scientific exploration
and medical treatment of illnesses in the transition zone
between neurology and psychiatry.
One key challenge for the next few years will be the
foreseeable lack of young medical doctors. In order to
attract and promote talented young people, the Department
of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy has improved the quality
of its specialty training programme in psychiatry and
psychotherapy and raised its profile as an institution of
