The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of
the LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf provides its services to the 572,000 citizens
of Düsseldorf and the 506,000 citizens of Mettmann County. The division
features 32 inpatient beds and a Day Care Unit with 16 places for the
treatment of infants, children and adolescents up to the age of 18.
Inpatient unit
The unit features 32 inpatient beds including a children’s ward (8 beds) for
children between the ages of 5 and 14.
The division aims to keep the inpatient part of its young patients’ treatment
to the bare minimum and to transfer them to outpatient treatment
structures at the earliest stage possible in order to preserve their network of
family relationships. Patients between the ages of 14 and 18 are preferably
admitted to one of the two adolescents’ wards (12 beds each), which have
similar organisational structures and target groups. The adolescents’ wards
12 A and 12 B follow the same concept: children, adolescents and young
adults are provided with psychiatric or psychotherapeutic crisis intervention.
The treatment is combined with measures intended to help the young
patients acquire independence and self-sufficiency skills.
The division applies selective-adaptive treatment concepts on the basis of
a salutogenetic approach. Assistance in exploiting existing resources is of
paramount importance. The objective is to promote the healthy parts of the
young individuals’ own selves, improve their social skills and prepare them
for reintegration into their home environments. Following the tenets of a
