It is planned to increase the proportion of practice-centred tuition in small groups, despite the large number of students, for example through new forms of “problem-oriented learning” in the framework of the medical faculty’s next curricular reform “Curriculum 2011”. Special seminars have already been developed to teach students the fundamentals of psychopathological diagnostics, an elementary skill that every medical doctor and particularly every psychiatrist should have. The technological potential of the video lab will be increasingly exploited. Students will also receive guidance as to how to conduct scientific research. Changes to the curricula of psychology students appear to be impending in the wake of a move at the Heinrich-Heine University from the traditional “university diploma” to a system of bachelor’s and master’s degrees. It is also planned to develop and extend existing efforts in education research. In 2006, for example, the Department conducted a survey about the stigmatisation of the mentally ill among medical students, which is currently being evaluated. At the moment, teaching research focuses on the “Lack of Medical Doctors in Psychiatry” as part of a research project supported by the World Psychiatric Association (see also Chapter 3.1.3.4 – Destigmatising Persons with Mental Illnesses). teACHinG 4.1.2 Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy The following excerpts from the University Calendar for the summer term 2010 provide an overview of the courses offered at the Department for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy.
