4.1 Academic Teaching for Students
4.1.1 Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
W. Gaebel, Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy,
is the chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and
Psychotherapy of the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich-Heine
University Düsseldorf. Until 2007, Professor Gaebel was the
chair of the Academic Teaching Commission III (UK III) of the
Medical Faculty of the Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf,
making him responsible for year 5 of the curriculum (Blocks
E and F). J. Zielasek is the UK III timetable coordinator for
Block E. The Hospital for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
hosts lectures for students of medicine and psychology
(who are studying psychiatry as an additional subject). F.
Schneider coordinated the academic teaching programme
until 2004, when he was succeeded by A. Klimke who, in
turn, was succeeded by J. Zielasek in 2005. In the wake of
changes to the German licensing regulations for medical
doctors, the University of Düsseldorf – no different from
all other universities in the country – had to change its
academic curriculum in 2004 and 2005. The number of
medical students has since risen to 150–180 per semester,
the number of psychology students to 10–15. At the same
time, the sizes of the groups in practical bedside teaching
was reduced, thus increasing small-group bedside teaching.
Psychiatry and psychotherapy are interesting additional
subjects for students of psychology, since many of these
students ultimately want to become clinical psychologists
or psychological psychotherapists. The Department of
Psychiatry and Psychotherapy conducts two compulsory
courses for students of medicine: it provides a contribution
to the seminar “Introduction to Clinical Medicine” for
students of preclinical medicine and, for students of
clinical medicine, a lecture course on “Psychiatry and
Psychotherapy”, which is accompanied by a new (also
compulsory) seminar in which students work in groups
of 20, and hospital bedside teaching in groups of 6 per
teacher (down from 10 per teacher before 2005). Students of
psychology may also attend these courses or take any other
course from the wide range of optional seminars that are on
offer at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
Another compulsory course for all students of clinical
medicine (Block E) is the lecture series on “Rehabilitation-I”,
coordinated by J. Zielasek on behalf of the Department of
Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. In addition, the Department
of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy also provides medical
students with tuition in their practical year, preparing them
in colloquia for their final exams.

The changes to the German licensing regulations for
medical doctors required a complete structural overhaul of
the medical examination system. The fields “Psychiatry and
Psychotherapy” introduced cross-departmental multiplechoice
tests (for the “Cross-Departmental Certificate of
Achievement in Neuropsychiatry”), jointly conducted by
the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, the
University Department of Neurology and the Department
of Psychosomatic Medicine. Similarly, in “Rehabilitation-I”
there is now a joint examination with the Department of
General Medicine (Rehabilitation Medicine, Complementary
Medicine and Naturopathy). The multiple-choice questions
are subjected to a formal and technical review by a dedicated
Review Committee of Curricular Commission III. J. Zielasek
