flat, providing space for a total of ten residents. The terrace, which can be
accessed from the basement flat, and a balcony above the annex add to the
charm of the property, making it a very pleasant place to live.
External residential community Im Schlank 13/13A
This external residential community is housed in the Düsseldorf suburb of
Lichtenbroich. The property consists of two semi-detached homes with twoand-a-half
floors each, accommodating 17 residents.
External residential community Kieshecker Weg 17
This community is also housed in the Düsseldorf suburb of Lichtenbroich.
The back garden of this house shares a border with the garden of the Im
Schlank residential community, which means that the two residential
groups are connected by a large (virtually common) garden and a paved
path. The two-storey building was erected in 2006, according to LVR
specifications, as a residential home for mentally ill persons. The first
tenants moved in in February 2007. The house provides twelve places in two
residential communities with four bedrooms each and four single-occupancy
apartments. The objective of the project is to provide apartments with a
maximum of independence. The individual groups or “apartment units” are
meant to become responsible for themselves. Support is provided by the
team that manages the Im Schlank residential community.
House 43
House 43 currently provides ten places for patients who are undergoing
medical rehabilitation for two to a maximum of three years. The residents
are mainly recruited from the patients of the LVR-Klinikum Divisions of
General Psychiatry.
Assisted living
Since other providers in the catchment area may find it impossible – for a
number of reasons – to provide care for people who have been discharged
from the Division of Social Rehabilitation having spent many years in
institutions and/or are suffering from severe mental disabilities, we have
been offering an assisted living scheme for these people since 1 January
2008. This scheme is designed to benefit residents of the Division of Social
Rehabilitation who would probably require no more than outpatient care but
who lack the courage to make this step because
s they need the safety afforded to them by the continuous relationship
with the staff members from the Division of Social Rehabilitation.
s they are stressed by the prospect of simultaneously losing their
familiar living structures and the relationships they have established
with the staff members of the Division of Social Rehabilitation.
s they need the familiar context of the institution to develop a minimum of
mental stability.
The provision of an assisted living scheme (including the planned extension/
conversion of inpatient places) for the aforementioned group of residents is
de signed to widen the circle of people who can move from inpatient accom-
modation into a more independent domestic arrangement with outpatient
care.
