statistical reports will identify trends and developments.
Since the rules of access to historic files have been
restructured and simplified, staff members have been able
to support several doctoral candidates simultaneously in
their comprehensive archive research efforts.
For example: 6,000 patient files are currently being
evaluated for a scientific project about the victims of violence
(in cooperation with the Institute of Forensic Medicine of
the Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf). Other research
for doctoral theses is concentrating on the “Effectiveness
of Different Types of Anti-Parkinson Medication” (in
cooperation with the Division of Neurology of the LVR-
Klinikum Düsseldorf) and the “Causes of Hyponatremia
in Gerontopsychiatry” (in cooperation with the Division of
Gerontopsychiatry of the LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf). The
unit for basic documentation concentrates on plausibility
checks and completeness checks of BADO and AMDP
data, IT records and the provision of these records as
well as statistical evaluations and reports (BADO: basic
documentation; AMDP: Association for Methods and
Documentation in Psychiatry).
Some of these statistical evaluations are performed when
needed to support certain projects or the work of the
departments and divisions who have requested them.
Regular evaluations, performed in cooperation with project
and research groups, include the following:
s The number of people in secure wards and the average
duration of their inpatient treatment is calculated
annually for the project “Drug Safety in Psychiatry”,
in cooperation with the Psychiatric Hospital of the
Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich
s A compilation of sociodemographic and illness-related
data and data on the average length of hospitalisation
of persons suffering from depression for the project
(module) Quality Assurance of the Competence
Network on Depression
s Processing and evaluation of clinically relevant data
as part of the joint venture with the research group on
“Borderline Personality Disorders”
The unit also creates an annual report for the LVR-Klinikum
Düsseldorf which is based on the BADO data and an annual
AMDP standard report which is based on the AMDP data.

The LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf, Hospital of the Heinrich-
Heine University Düsseldorf, provides its scientific research
units with a service-oriented IT infrastructure. For the
scientists, this means:

s Continuous adjustment of storage capacities and
terminals in line with requirements
The following steps were taken to help the unit to reach
these objectives:
s Construction of two new secure server rooms with
uninterruptible power supply, fire protection, protection
from burglary, backup systems and backup site
s Regular maintenance and security servicing for all
central components
s On-site service and support through external providers
s Permanent monitoring of capacities and infrastructural
adjustments with economically viable modern products
