LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf Hospital of the Heinrich-Heine University ...

A total of 940 people are employed by the LVR-Klinikum
Düsseldorf (as per January 2010). This makes the Klinikum
one of the largest hospitals run by the Landschaftsverband
Rhineland (which operates and closely coordinates
altogether ten hospitals under the joint umbrella of a
hospital network and a common central administration
office) and one of the key healthcare providers in the
region. The Klinikum features all divisions of clinical
psychiatry as well as central facilities for diagnosis
and therapy, a research facility and a unit for academic
teaching. It currently has 675 beds/treatment places, 108
of which are for partial hospitalisation. The Department
of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Heinrich-Heine
University Düsseldorf covers the field of psychiatry and
psychotherapy and consists of four Divisions of General
Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (General Psychiatry I, General
Psychiatry II, Gerontopsychiatry, Dependence Disorders; 480
beds/places, 73 of which are for partial hospitalisation), a
Division of Rehabilitation (68 beds/places) and a Division of
Neurology (36 beds). The Full Professor for Psychiatry and
Psychotherapy is the medical director of the department.
The LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf – Hospital of the Heinrich-
Heine University Düsseldorf also has a Division of Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (48 beds/places, 16
of which are for partial hospitalisation) and a Department of
Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy of the Heinrich-
Heine University (43 beds/places, 19 of which are for partial
hospitalisation). (All figures as per February 2010.)
The LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf also operates a range of out-
patient facilities: a facility for pre-inpatient outpatient care,
dedicated outpatient units, a polyclinic, several day care
clinics, an early detection centre for mental disorders and
several special outpatient centres, at both the main site
(Bergische Landstrasse 2) and the Düsseldorf University
Hospital (Moorenstrasse 5). The hospital grounds also
accommodate a school for patients and a school of nursing as
well as a train ing institute for psychological psychotherapists.
Each of the eight divisions – with the exception of the
rehabilitation division, which is run by a psychologist –
is headed by a medical doctor, including the Division of
General Psychiatry II (Head of the division: the Full Professor
for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy) and the Department of
Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy (Head of the
department: the Full Professor for Psycho somatic Medicine
and Psychotherapy). The top tier of the hospital management
consists of an Executive Board (since 1 January 2010: the
Board of Directors) featuring the Medical Director, the Director
of Nursing and the Director of Hospital Administration (since
ReSPonSibilitieS AnD RAnge oF SeRViCeS
1 January 2010: the Chairman of the Board). (For more details,

The LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf – Hospital of the
Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf has the following
responsibilities:
s Provision of inpatient, partial hospitalisation, pre- and
post-inpatient as well as outpatient care for (early)
detection of mental and neurological disorders;
treatment and alleviation of symptoms and prevention
of deterioration
s Research and academic teaching
s Provision of post-graduate specialty training for
medical doctors in the specialties of psychiatry
and psychotherapy, psychosomatic medicine and
psychotherapy, child and adolescent psychiatry and
psychotherapy, and neurology
s Implementation of hospital treatment orders as well as
other hospitalisation and treatment orders under the
laws of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia
s Representation of the interests of people with mental
and psychosomatic disorders, representation of the
fields of psychiatry and psychotherapy, psychosomatic
medicine and psychotherapy, neurology, and child and
adolescent psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine and
psychotherapy in academic societies as well as national
and international organisations
s Professional development of medical doctors through
the provision of advanced training courses (continuing
medical education)
s Provision of expert opinions and official reports
s Public relations
Provided they have given their legally valid consent, persons
with a wide range of mental illnesses can be integrated
into the research and academic training efforts. This allows
the acquisition of important research results on the basis
of representative samples and ensures that the patients
themselves benefit from scientific progress. It also enables
the LVR-Klinikum to root the training of medical students,
post-graduate specialist trainees and board-certified
specialists in the broadest possible clinical foundation.
The activities of staff members in medical organisations
have ensured that the LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf enjoys the
reputation of a highly competent centre for all issues of
diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders far beyond the
narrow confines of the immediate region. This is reflected by
the LVR-Klinikum’s presence at medical congresses and in
scientific publications and the general media.
