Psychometric tests are used in diagnostic studies,
outcome studies and the status description of patients
and test persons. Within the context of basic research the
quality of existing instruments was tested using modern
psychometric procedures, and alternatives were developed
to assess quality (Mokken analyses, item bias analyses and
confirmatory factor analyses). Concepts were developed for
assessing changes in outcome studies (concept of statistical
and clinical significance) and tested in empirical studies.
The effects of a computer-assisted test application were
investigated in a randomised, controlled study for two widely
used instruments, the symptom checklist SCL-90-R and the
inventory of interpersonal problems. .

The work of the research unit is mainly centred on a)
questions to psychotherapists regarding their person and
relating to the subjective treatment concepts of therapists
and their practical relevance, as well as b) questions on the

psychotherapeutic process and the subjective treatment
and disorder concepts of patients. The methodical principle
behind this is the grounded theory approach of Glaser
and Strauss. The research group investigated transcripts
of “natural” discussion situations (initial interviews,
treatment discussions) as well as partly structured or
narrative interviews with patients and therapists, with the
aim of developing, from larger and complex bodies of text,
condensing and interpretive models relating to the various
investigation models. The following ongoing and concluded
sub-projects can be listed:

initial encounters
s Qualitative investigation of music-therapy
improvisations
s Psychosocial aspects of illness experiences of patients
with endometriosis
s Perspectives of the course of partial inpatient
psychosomatic treatment
s Self and others concepts of departmental heads
s Indication and activity concepts of practice
psychoanalysts
The current focus of the work is the qualitative analysis of
group psychotherapy sessions with patients in the second
halves of their lives.
