Daniel #136: You then mention ―[Jesus‘] definition of Holy Matrimony‖, and yet you
might be surprised to learn that Jesus never provided such a definition! Indeed, Jesus was
talking about divorce in Matthew 19, my Friend, not marriage. And he was definitely not
limiting marriage to a union solely between one man & one woman. In truth, the Bible makes it
very clear that polygamy was also still a common – and also still an acceptable – form of
marriage in Jesus‘ day (Paul essentially admits the same in 1 Corinthians 7:32-35). No, in point of
fact, when Jesus made this particular statement the discussion was about divorce, namely
whether or not a man could divorce his wife whenever he wanted – or whether he could only do
so for reasons of infidelity (though the parallel passages in Luke & Mark seem to show Jesus
forbidding divorce completely – see Mark 10:2-12 & Luke 16:18). Jesus chose the latter, more Lovefriendly
alternative (of course), and yet he was not in any way proclaiming the sole sanctity of
heterosexual marriage thereby!
And even if he was somehow saying that man-woman partnerships do justify a marriage,
he never once said that man-man or woman-woman unions did not do so (and remember that Jesus
was very fond of specifically calling out all the behaviors he despised – like arrogance and hypocrisy, for
example )… Finally, on top of all that, Jesus seemed to understand the Truth that marriage
contracts actually limit Love‘s expression and make Love that much more difficult to give, and
as such he was actually against marriage of any kind for anybody – gays and straights alike!
Please consider:
― For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have
been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the
sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let everyone accept this who can … For in the resurrection
they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but rather are like angels of God in Heaven.‖
~ Jesus Christ (Matthew 19:12 + Matthew 22:30)
