49THE MATRIX OF ANCIENT SPIRITUALITYpatron; or a subordinate child dependent upon an authoritarian parent.In all cases, the human being is the lesser entity, bound to the wishes andwhims of entities far superior to him or her. The religions that the ancientpeople constructed out of the servant, covenant, and ecstatic formsof spirituality are based entirely on metaphors of subservience, bondage,humiliation, and fear.Where did these metaphors come from? What caused the ancient peopleto perceive their relationship to the sacred in this manner? Why didthey understand their purpose in life in terms of slavery and vassalage?These metaphors were drawn from the everyday experience of their livesas people ruled by terrifying kings and capricious oligarchs in slaveholdingsocieties. Even nonslaves were dominated by the fathers of their householdsand were subject to a system of benefaction based on their serviceto wealthy patrons. In other words, their daily experiences of forced labor,oppressive governments, patriarchal families, and the avaricious wealthywas their view of reality, and this extended to their conceptualization ofthe sacred and the transcendent.Once these patterns of subservience toward the sacred were embeddedwithin the myths, symbols, and rituals of the ancient religions, thereligions themselves became powerful instruments that maintained society’spatterns of dominance and servitude. The dominance of the mightykings, the fathers, and the wealthy was reinforced by the teachings of thereligions. The religions, then, became powerful advertisements of the human’splace in the world and in society, as obedient and humble slaves toentities superior to them, whether these were gods or the men who ruledover them.That is, until Gnostic spirituality arose to interrogate the status quo. Itwas the emergence of Gnostic spirituality at the start of the first centuryCE that provided an alternative model of reality, one in which the humanis not a servant to the gods but is liberated from them. The first Gnosticsflipped the old forms of spirituality upside down as they became aware ofanother reality altogether.Their first suspicions that all was not right in the world must have beensimilar to Neo’s initiation into the Matrix, which starts when Neo meetsMorpheus for the first time. Morpheus tells him that Neo is meeting withhim because Neo knows something is wrong with life. What he knows, hecannot explain, but only feels. He has felt it his entire life, that something
