25 – 27 March 1945: For <strong>the</strong>se three days, <strong>the</strong>re was no flying,<br />

except for a few transition flights. Practice missions were not<br />

made due to hazy conditions. However, a training flight did take<br />

th<br />

place on <strong>the</strong> 27 for some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newer members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group.<br />

Aside from this, ground school and training activities were<br />

carried out with fair attendance, as per this squadron is<br />

concerned. There were a few pre-flights made to break in some new<br />

engines.<br />

28 March 1945: The 323 squadron took part in <strong>the</strong> group’s 323<br />

mission to bomb <strong>the</strong> aero engine factory at Spandau and <strong>the</strong><br />

Stendal Marshalling yards. The lead and low squadrons and six<br />

ship element <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> high squadron bombed <strong>the</strong> No. 2 target by PFF<br />

methods with unobserved results. The high squadron leader, with<br />

five <strong>of</strong> his ships and 2 from ano<strong>the</strong>r squadron, bombed <strong>the</strong> No. 3<br />

target (Stendal by PFF methods) with unobserved results. Twelve<br />

ships <strong>of</strong> this squadron led <strong>the</strong> division as follows: Major<br />

Thompson with an “A” crew in ship #471 leading <strong>the</strong> division;<br />

#116, Lt. Dean and crew; #379, Lt. Martinson and crew; #630 (Dep.<br />

Division Lead), Lt. Sc<strong>of</strong>ield and crew; #038 (322 ), Lt. Constock<br />

and crew; #618, Lt. Whitten and crew; #939, Lt. Cochran and crew;<br />

#909, Lt. Smiekel and crew; #636, Lt. Harvey and crew; #615, Lt.<br />

Lawson and crew; #263, Lt. Blanchet and crew; #225, Lt. Hunt and<br />

crew. All returned safely to base and <strong>the</strong>re were no abortives.<br />

29 March 1945: There was no mission scheduled for <strong>the</strong> group.<br />

Ground school and training activities were carried out.<br />

30 March 1945: Bremen , Germany was bombed visually. Pin-pointing<br />

was made on <strong>the</strong> shipbuilding yards with good to excellent<br />

results. Of <strong>the</strong> thirteen ships and crews <strong>of</strong> this squadron<br />

participating, all returned safely to base with aborts nil. #471,<br />
