11 December 1943:<br />

Personnel Changes: Sgt. Fegeley from duty to sick in quarters LD. M/Sgt. Mattie from duty to<br />

transferred to <strong>the</strong> 12th replacement control depot. 1/Lt. Thomas J. Gannon (B), 2/Lt. William R.<br />

James (P), were assigned and joined (322nd <strong>Bomb</strong> Sq) effective 9 Dec. 1943.<br />

Mission: To Emden, Germany: Five A/C <strong>of</strong> this squadron took <strong>of</strong>f at 0845 hours on a mission to<br />

Emden, Germany to bomb <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. AA fire at <strong>the</strong> target was moderate and accurate<br />

for our A/C at 22,000 and 24,000 feet. Only four enemy aircraft were reported observed.<br />

Supporting fighters effectively drove away enemy aircraft although very few <strong>of</strong> our fighters were<br />

seen. Good bombing results were reported by returning crews; a high column <strong>of</strong> yellow smoke as<br />

well as many hits in <strong>the</strong> area around <strong>the</strong> inner and old inner harbors and two large fires in <strong>the</strong><br />

Northwest section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town having been observed. All ships <strong>of</strong> this group returned safely. No<br />

Flying: One A/C flew on a local flight for a total <strong>of</strong> 2:00 hours.<br />

Awards and Citations: The Oak Leaf Cluster to <strong>the</strong> Air Medal was awarded for five separate<br />

missions over enemy occupied continental Europe, per GO #33, HQ 1st SD, 12 December 1943<br />

to <strong>the</strong> following: S/Sgt. Theodore T. Wyzkoski
