RESUMEN<br />
En este trabajo se describe el comportamiento y la organización social de l<strong>as</strong><br />
vicuñ<strong>as</strong> <strong>Vicu</strong>gna vicugna. La organización social de l<strong>as</strong> vicuñ<strong>as</strong> se b<strong>as</strong>a en grupos<br />
familiares (un macho, 3-4 hembr<strong>as</strong> y sus crí<strong>as</strong>) y grupos de solteros. L<strong>as</strong> distanci<strong>as</strong><br />
entre hembr<strong>as</strong> fueron generalmente constantes. La distancia entre el macho territorial<br />
y sus hembr<strong>as</strong> fue siempre mayor que la inter-hembra. Los solteros mostraron l<strong>as</strong><br />
distanci<strong>as</strong> menores reflejando su respuesta a la agresión de los machos territoriales.<br />
L<strong>as</strong> vicuñ<strong>as</strong> p<strong>as</strong>an la mayor parte de su tiempo p<strong>as</strong>toreando pero se alimentan m<strong>as</strong><br />
en otoño-invierno que en verano. Existe un pico de actividad de bebida al mediodía.<br />
L<strong>as</strong> hembr<strong>as</strong> p<strong>as</strong>aron significativamente m<strong>as</strong> tiempo comiendo y menos tiempo<br />
alerta que los machos. El comportamiento de alerta de los machos aumento y el<br />
p<strong>as</strong>toreo disminuyo con el número de hembr<strong>as</strong> en sus famili<strong>as</strong> sugiriendo un tamaño<br />
de grupo óptimo. Los machos territoriales son los animales m<strong>as</strong> agresivos en relación<br />
a otr<strong>as</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>es de edad/estatus/sexo. Los machos territoriales iniciaron encuentros<br />
con otros machos territoriales (nivel bajo de agresión), solteros (nivel alto de agresión)<br />
y hembr<strong>as</strong> (arreo).<br />
L<strong>as</strong> vicuñ<strong>as</strong> pertenecen a la categoría de seguidor<strong>as</strong> en la clásica cl<strong>as</strong>ificación<br />
de especies de ungulados.<br />
SUMMARY<br />
This article describes the behaviour and social organization of vicuñ<strong>as</strong> <strong>Vicu</strong>gna<br />
vicugna. <strong>Vicu</strong>ñ<strong>as</strong> social organization is b<strong>as</strong>ed on territorial family groups (one male,<br />
3-4 females and calves) and bachelor groups. Distances between females were usually<br />
constant. Distance between territorial males and their nearest female were always<br />
greater than those between females. Distances between bachelors were the shortest,<br />
reflecting their response to har<strong>as</strong>sment by territorial males. <strong>Vicu</strong>ñ<strong>as</strong> spent most of<br />
their diurnal time foraging but they foraged more and rested less in autumn-winter<br />
than in summer. There w<strong>as</strong> a daily midday peak in the use of water resources. Females<br />
spent significantly more time grazing and less time alert than territorial males. The<br />
