JOHNSON* *Laboratory of Genomic Diversity-FCRDC/NCI, Building 560, Room 11-10, Frederick, MD 21702-1201, USA. § Department of Animal Ecology, Room 124 Science II, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011 RESUMEN Los camélidos aparecieron en Norteamérica hace aproximadamente 40 a 45 millones de años atrás y fueron una de las primeras familias de artiodáctilos. Se dispersaron a América del Sur hace aproximadamente 3 a 4 millones de años y desaparecieron de Norteamérica hace aproximadamente 10.000 años. A pesar del interés creciente en los camélidos sudamericanos por su fibra, a raíz de su estado de especie amenazada o en peligro de extinción, no ha habido estudios de genética molecular al nivel de población. Estamos utilizando marcadores de ADN mitocondrial (ADN mt) y microsatélites para describir patrones de variación genética molecular en poblaciones de Camélidos Sudamericanos. Inicialmente nos hemos enfocado en las poblaciones del Parque Nacional Torres del Paine y la Isla de Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Combinado con estimaciones poblaciones actuales e históricos, nuestra evaluación genética comparativa sustenta el escenario de que las poblaciones modernas de guanaco de la isla descienden de las poblaciones continentales cuando la isla se formó hace aproximadamente 8.000 años atrás. Vamos a seguir usando estos marcadores para identificar distintos grupos de camélidos (subespecies, poblaciones, etc.). El hecho de que esta especie se encuentre, por lo general, en pequeñas poblaciones fragmentadas a través de todo su rango, el conocer la heterocigosidad en cada especie, y entre diferentes especies, podrá tener implicaciones importantes para su manejo y conservación. 47
