anti-inflammatory effect of different doses of a inmunomodulator via
intrauterine (IU) administration was evaluated in the elimination of induced
infectious endometritis with Streptococcus zooepidemicus.
For this purpose a total of twenty-four mares were used in a two
period crossover experimental design to evaluate 4 treatments (3 different
doses and a control). The experimental design involved six mares per group
in two periods (or phases), with 12 observations per treatment. Before
treatment assignment, all mares were first diagnosed as free of any uterine
bacterial infection, and then they were challenged with a standardized IU
inoculum of live Streptococcus zooepidemicus to induce clinical
endometritis. Experimental animals were divided into four equal groups. To
assess the status of endometritis for each individual, ultrasonography
detection of intrauterine fluid, uterine swabs and biopsy samples were
collected at four different points during the study. The efficacy of each
treatment was evaluated by variables that were expressed as categorical
data (culture positive or negative, biopsy grades between I and IV, positive
or negative for uterine fluid, and exfoliative cytology positive or negative).
All samples were analyzed, using PROC GENMOD procedure of Statistical
Analysis Systems, Version 8 (SAS, Institute Inc.,Cary, NC, USA) to fit
generalized linear models, using options DIST=BINOMIAL or
DIST=MULTINOMIAL in the MODEL statement.
Significant statistical differences were detected in culture, biopsy and
cytology (P0.05).
This test has shown to be suitable for analysis of the mentioned
experimental design.
