geológico y a niveles taxonómicos.
tiempo.
Eutacticity in Sea Urchin evolution
An eutactic star, in a N-dimensional space, is a set of N vectors which
can be viewed as the projection of N orthogonal vectors in a N-dimensional
space. In this work, we shall show that this mathematical property
(eutacticity) is clearly present in sea urchins belonging to the Echinoidea
Class. Since, from the mathematical point of view eutacticity is associated
with regularity, our results suggest a high degree of regularity in the shape
of these organisms. To each sea urchin we associate a vector star, with
vectors pointing to the ocular plates. In this way, we analyze a collection of
157 sea urchins, by using digital photography and morphometric software
packages, MakeFan6 and tpsDig2. A statistical analysis, showing the degree
of eutacticity and changes in a macroevolutive and taxonomic level in this
biological group, indicates that eutacticity is far from being just a random
process. On the other hand, we show that there is a slight deviation from
high eutacticity through time.
