Introduction<br />
The project is created in collaboration between Graduate program in<br />
Mathematics <strong>of</strong> Facultad <strong>de</strong> Ciencias Fisico-Matematicas (FCFM) and<br />
Graduate program in Environmental Sciences <strong>of</strong> Instituto <strong>de</strong> Ciencias<br />
(ICUAP) <strong>of</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Puebla (BUAP). The intention is to apply the<br />
mathematical mo<strong>de</strong>ling in the un<strong>de</strong>rstanding and resolution <strong>of</strong> real<br />
environmental problems. The Puebla valley watershed is located in the<br />
central region <strong>of</strong> Mexico with an average altitu<strong>de</strong> <strong>of</strong> 2180 meters above sea<br />
level, including 14 municipalities with an approximated surface <strong>of</strong> 1,493<br />
Km 2 , is part <strong>of</strong> the Atoyac River basin with a population <strong>of</strong> 1´878,823<br />
inhabitants (INEGI, 2001).<br />
General Objetive<br />
Carry out a mathematical mo<strong>de</strong>ling that <strong>de</strong>scribes in a dynamic and<br />
connected way the main processes that take part in the hydric balance <strong>of</strong><br />
the Puebla valley watershed and to apply it to the <strong>de</strong>velopment <strong>of</strong> a<br />
methodology for its sustainable management. This methodology will be<br />
applied in an interactive system that can be used as a tool in the <strong>de</strong>cision<br />
making process <strong>of</strong> an environmental management system.<br />
Partial objetives<br />
• Develop a mathematical mo<strong>de</strong>l <strong>of</strong> the dynamics <strong>of</strong> a self-contained<br />
acuifer, like the one <strong>of</strong> Puebla valley, with presence <strong>of</strong> sources and<br />
drains and to use it for the study <strong>of</strong> groundwater flow through acuifer<br />
bor<strong>de</strong>r.<br />
• Develop a mathematical mo<strong>de</strong>l <strong>of</strong> the water global balance in the<br />
Puebla valley watershed and applied to <strong>de</strong>fine control strategies <strong>of</strong><br />
different resources that compose it.<br />
• Analysis <strong>of</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> the economic, social and institutional factors<br />
in the land and water uses in the watershed and its inci<strong>de</strong>nce in the<br />
hydric global balance with the purpose <strong>of</strong> un<strong>de</strong>rstanding in a systemic<br />
and integral way the dynamics <strong>of</strong> the Puebla valley watershed.
