Introduction
The project is created in collaboration between Graduate program in
Mathematics of Facultad de Ciencias Fisico-Matematicas (FCFM) and
Graduate program in Environmental Sciences of Instituto de Ciencias
(ICUAP) of University of Puebla (BUAP). The intention is to apply the
mathematical modeling in the understanding and resolution of real
environmental problems. The Puebla valley watershed is located in the
central region of Mexico with an average altitude of 2180 meters above sea
level, including 14 municipalities with an approximated surface of 1,493
Km 2 , is part of the Atoyac River basin with a population of 1´878,823
inhabitants (INEGI, 2001).
General Objetive
Carry out a mathematical modeling that describes in a dynamic and
connected way the main processes that take part in the hydric balance of
the Puebla valley watershed and to apply it to the development of a
methodology for its sustainable management. This methodology will be
applied in an interactive system that can be used as a tool in the decision
making process of an environmental management system.
Partial objetives
• Develop a mathematical model of the dynamics of a self-contained
acuifer, like the one of Puebla valley, with presence of sources and
drains and to use it for the study of groundwater flow through acuifer
border.
• Develop a mathematical model of the water global balance in the
Puebla valley watershed and applied to define control strategies of
different resources that compose it.
• Analysis of influence of the economic, social and institutional factors
in the land and water uses in the watershed and its incidence in the
hydric global balance with the purpose of understanding in a systemic
and integral way the dynamics of the Puebla valley watershed.
