Joint Conference of the EAHMH and
the INHPH Almuñécar, Granada
(Spain) 2-5 September, 1999
The European Association for the
History of Medicine and Health
(EAHMH) and the International
Network for the History of Public
Health (INHPH) announce
their next major Conference to be
held from 2nd to 5th September
1999 in Almuñécar (Granada),
Spain.
The general subject of the Conference
is The Healthy Life: People,
Perceptions and Politics. This
meeting is intended to explore the
complexity of historical conditions
that mould human actions linked
to health. We would like to focus
on the interrelationship of people
and authorities, the confrontation
of cultures and ideologies, and the
lay-expert divide in a field where
medical theories and practices occupy
a privileged but not exclusive
space. Although contemporary
and Western European issues
are currently well represented in
EAHMH and INHPH, we would
like to encourage the submission
of papers dealing with other parts
of Europe and with non-European,
non-Christian, non-contemporary
issues.
Venue
The conference will be hosted by
the Centro Mediterráneo of the
University of Granada at its quarters
in Almuñécar, situated on the
Mediterranean coast of Andalusia,
south of Granada and 110 km east
of Malaga. The easiest mode of
transportation to the conference
from outside Spain is by plane to
the international airport of Malaga,
which may be reached by direct
flights from most countries, or to
the national airport of Granada,
via Madrid or Barcelona. A shuttle
bus service will be provided at
a specified time in the evening on
Wednesday, September 1 and in the
morning or early afternoon on Sunday,
September 5 from and to both
neighbouring airports. Regular bus
lines also run from Madrid, Granada
and Malaga to Almuñécar.
Provisional Programme
The program will consist of three
and a half days of plenary sessions
(each about two hours in length)
and parallel sessions (one or two
hours in length), plus an optional
half-day visit to Alhambra. Sessions
are planned dealing with: “Concepts
and Definitions” (philosophy, history,
cultures of health), “Science,
Medicine and Public Health” (the
boundaries of medical professions;
the goals of medicine; the science of
health; is public health a science),
“How to Measure a Healthy Life”,
“Demands for Health” (negotiat-

between people and authority),
“Health as an Industrial Complex”,
“Protection of Health” (protection
and security; health insurance; state
regulation); “Private and Public in
Public Health”. Room must be left
for discussion in all sessions. Other
sessions will be arranged on at least
one afternoon from the proposals
received. A POSTER SESSION is
also planned.
Invited Speakers
To open the conference, Paul Weindling
(Oxford), will speak on “The
Origin of Health Indicators and
Local Studies in the between-thewars
Period” and Andreu Segura
(Barcelona) on “The Mirage of
Health”. Prof. Esther Fischer-
Homberger (Bern) will give the
customary evening lecture.

Registration
Registration will be open between
mid-January and end of June
1999. The application form will be
circulated together with a full programme.
The registration fee will
be 20000 ptas (75 ECU) for those
who register before the first of May
1999 and 25000 ptas (93 ECU) for
those who register after that date.
The registration fee covers the shuttle
from and to one of the neighbouring
airports of Granada or
Malaga, the book of abstracts, day
meals, and six coffee breaks.
Accommodation costs are NOT
covered by the registration fee.
Awards and support
The organisers are working towards
obtaining sponsors to fund the registration
fee and/or the costs of room
and board for a number of recent
Ph.D.’s or advanced graduate students,
preferably from least favoured
countries, so they may attend this
conference. No travel support will be
provided by this organisation.
Accommodation
A local travel agency has made special
arrangements for the conference.
The offer stands until the 30th April
1999. Potential participants should
be aware that Almuñécar is a strong
beach resort and the first days of September
are still high season. So, make
your reservations as soon as possible.
