the INHPH Almuñécar, Granada<br />

The European Association for the<br />

History of Medicine and Health<br />

(EAHMH) and the International<br />

<strong>Net</strong>work for the History of Public<br />

Health (INHPH) announce<br />

their next major Confer<strong>en</strong>ce to be<br />

held from 2nd to 5th September<br />

<strong>1999</strong> in Almuñécar (Granada),<br />

Spain.<br />

The g<strong>en</strong>eral subject of the Confer<strong>en</strong>ce<br />

is The Healthy Life: People,<br />

Perceptions and Politics. This<br />

meeting is int<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>d to explore the<br />

complexity of historical conditions<br />

that mould human actions linked<br />

to health. We would like to focus<br />

on the interrelationship of people<br />

and authorities, the confrontation<br />

of cultures and i<strong>de</strong>ologies, and the<br />

lay-expert divi<strong>de</strong> in a field where<br />

medical theories and practices occupy<br />

a privileged but not exclusive<br />

space. Although contemporary<br />

and Western European issues<br />

are curr<strong>en</strong>tly well repres<strong>en</strong>ted in<br />

EAHMH and INHPH, we would<br />

like to <strong>en</strong>courage the submission<br />

of papers <strong>de</strong>aling with other parts<br />

of Europe and with non-European,<br />

non-Christian, non-contemporary<br />

issues.<br />

V<strong>en</strong>ue<br />

The confer<strong>en</strong>ce will be hosted by<br />

the C<strong>en</strong>tro Mediterráneo of the<br />

University of Granada at its quarters<br />

in Almuñécar, situated on the<br />

Mediterranean coast of Andalusia,<br />

south of Granada and 110 km east<br />

of Malaga. The easiest mo<strong>de</strong> of<br />

transportation to the confer<strong>en</strong>ce<br />

from outsi<strong>de</strong> Spain is by plane to<br />

the international airport of Malaga,<br />

which may be reached by direct<br />

flights from most countries, or to<br />

the national airport of Granada,<br />

via Madrid or Barcelona. A shuttle<br />

bus service will be provi<strong>de</strong>d at<br />

a specified time in the ev<strong>en</strong>ing on<br />

Wednesday, September 1 and in the<br />

morning or early afternoon on Sunday,<br />

September 5 from and to both<br />

neighbouring airports. Regular bus<br />

lines also run from Madrid, Granada<br />

and Malaga to Almuñécar.<br />

Provisional Programme<br />

The program will consist of three<br />

and a half days of pl<strong>en</strong>ary sessions<br />

(each about two hours in l<strong>en</strong>gth)<br />

and parallel sessions (one or two<br />

hours in l<strong>en</strong>gth), plus an optional<br />

half-day visit to Alhambra. Sessions<br />

are planned <strong>de</strong>aling with: “Concepts<br />

and Definitions” (philosophy, history,<br />

cultures of health), “Sci<strong>en</strong>ce,<br />

Medicine and Public Health” (the<br />

boundaries of medical professions;<br />

the goals of medicine; the sci<strong>en</strong>ce of<br />

health; is public health a sci<strong>en</strong>ce),<br />

“How to Measure a Healthy Life”,<br />

“Demands for Health” (negotiat-<br />

“Health as an Industrial Complex”,<br />

“Protection of Health” (protection<br />

and security; health insurance; state<br />

regulation); “Private and Public in<br />

Public Health”. Room must be left<br />

for discussion in all sessions. Other<br />

sessions will be arranged on at least<br />

one afternoon from the proposals<br />

received. A POSTER SESSION is<br />

also planned.<br />

Invited Speakers<br />

To op<strong>en</strong> the confer<strong>en</strong>ce, Paul Weindling<br />

(Oxford), will speak on “The<br />

Origin of Health Indicators and<br />

Local Studies in the betwe<strong>en</strong>-thewars<br />

Period” and Andreu Segura<br />

(Barcelona) on “The Mirage of<br />

Health”. Prof. Esther Fischer-<br />

Homberger (Bern) will give the<br />

customary ev<strong>en</strong>ing lecture.<br />

Registration<br />

Registration will be op<strong>en</strong> betwe<strong>en</strong><br />

mid-January and <strong>en</strong>d of June<br />

<strong>1999</strong>. The application form will be<br />

circulated together with a full programme.<br />

The registration fee will<br />

be 20000 ptas (75 ECU) for those<br />

who register before the first of May<br />

<strong>1999</strong> and 25000 ptas (93 ECU) for<br />

those who register after that date.<br />

The registration fee covers the shuttle<br />

from and to one of the neighbouring<br />

airports of Granada or<br />

Malaga, the book of abstracts, day<br />

meals, and six coffee breaks.<br />

Accommodation costs are NOT<br />

covered by the registration fee.<br />

Awards and support<br />

The organisers are working towards<br />

obtaining sponsors to fund the registration<br />

fee and/or the costs of room<br />

and board for a number of rec<strong>en</strong>t<br />

Ph.D.’s or ad<strong>van</strong>ced graduate stu<strong>de</strong>nts,<br />

preferably from least favoured<br />

countries, so they may att<strong>en</strong>d this<br />

confer<strong>en</strong>ce. No travel support will be<br />

provi<strong>de</strong>d by this organisation.<br />

Accommodation<br />

A local travel ag<strong>en</strong>cy has ma<strong>de</strong> special<br />

arrangem<strong>en</strong>ts for the confer<strong>en</strong>ce.<br />

The offer stands until the 30th April<br />

<strong>1999</strong>. Pot<strong>en</strong>tial participants should<br />

be aware that Almuñécar is a strong<br />

beach resort and the first days of September<br />

are still high season. So, make<br />
