medische <strong>en</strong> economische argum<strong>en</strong>tatie<br />

die <strong>de</strong> toepassing er<strong>van</strong><br />

stimuleer<strong>de</strong>n dan wel teg<strong>en</strong>hiel<strong>de</strong>n.<br />

Op dit mom<strong>en</strong>t bestu<strong>de</strong>ert hij<br />

vroeg 19e eeuwse handboek<strong>en</strong><br />

(<strong>en</strong>gels, duits, frans) op dit gebied.<br />

Uitein<strong>de</strong>lijk is hij <strong>voor</strong>al geïnteresseerd<br />

in <strong>de</strong> vraag in welke gebouwtyp<strong>en</strong><br />

Medische geografie<br />

De informatie over <strong>de</strong>ze in januari<br />

gehou<strong>de</strong>n confer<strong>en</strong>tie kwam te<br />

laat, maar <strong>de</strong> sam<strong>en</strong>vatting maakt<br />

nieuwsgierig. Daarom volgt hier<br />

toch e<strong>en</strong> sam<strong>en</strong>vatting.<br />

The Geography of Health and the<br />

History and Philosophy of Geography<br />

research groups have conv<strong>en</strong>ed a<br />

half-day at the Royal Geographical<br />

Society, with the Institute of British<br />

Geographers Annual Confer<strong>en</strong>ce,<br />

5th-8th January 1998 - Kingston/Guildford,<br />

England. Medical<br />

geography, as a holistic ‘tradition’<br />

concerned with health and place<br />

intersecting numerous disciplinary<br />

boundaries, has un<strong>de</strong>rgone trem<strong>en</strong>dous<br />

change in its history. Drawing<br />

together the concerns of numerous<br />

<strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>tal health specialities,<br />

this tradition has fostered the<br />

collaboration of geographers and<br />

their medical counterparts in the<br />

promotion of western health mo<strong>de</strong>ls<br />

across the globe. From earliest<br />

articulations in anci<strong>en</strong>t Greece,<br />

medical geography has relied upon,<br />

and contributed to, acclimatization<br />

studies, colonial medicine, tropical<br />

medicine, Public health surveillance<br />

and so on. As such, it has be<strong>en</strong> involved<br />

in attempts to improve the<br />

health and sanitization of ‘othered’<br />

<strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>ts through the ext<strong>en</strong>sion<br />

of national administrative<br />

power. The aim of this session was<br />

to foster a critical un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of<br />
