Conference’ Location: Scottish Natural
Heritage Countryside Centre, Battleby,
Perthshire, Scotland, UK.
Date: Tuesday, 22 September 1998
The landscape is many things: a
work place for farmers and foresters,
a playground for urban people,
a thing of beautytreasured by
everyone, a living space for plants,
insects and animals. It is also part
of our historic heritage, shaped by
people who have left their traces
upon it, nor merely dotted with
archaeological sites, but often so
richly full of field systems,shielings,
dykes etc. as to constitute an “historical
landscape” itself. The purpose
of this one-day symposium is
to explore the interfaces between
archaeological and modern forms of
landuse,including forestry, farming,
recreation and nature conservation,
in the context of landscape. Do we
all know what archaeologists want
Does the archaeologist know How
can the problems be solved How
do archaeologists study the landscape
Is this of any value to anyone
else The programme is designed
to address these problems both directly
and obliquely.
