assertions of its ‘apolitical’ or ‘objective’<br />

nature. Giv<strong>en</strong> the revival<br />

of interest in Western medicine’s<br />

role differ<strong>en</strong>t imperial projects, and<br />

in the colonization of the human<br />

body, it is time to consi<strong>de</strong>r the place<br />

of medical geographers trained in<br />

the US and in Europe in ad<strong>van</strong>cing<br />

these goals. This session <strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>avoured<br />

to reconsi<strong>de</strong>r the articulation<br />

of medico-geographic knowledge as<br />

The confer<strong>en</strong>ce explored how people<br />

in the ninete<strong>en</strong>th c<strong>en</strong>tury thought<br />

about, repres<strong>en</strong>ted, and ma<strong>de</strong> use of<br />

space. How did i<strong>de</strong>as about space and<br />

its mappings reflect and contribute<br />

to notions of self, of travel, or relations<br />

with others How were class and<br />

g<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>r relations expressed through<br />

space How did relations to physical<br />

space contribute to i<strong>de</strong>as about race<br />

and nation Aspects of physical space<br />

as it was figured in ninete<strong>en</strong>th-c<strong>en</strong>tury<br />

Britain and America or on responses<br />

to these figurations from the larger<br />

world. Areas of interest: the social<br />

dim<strong>en</strong>sions of spatial analysis and<br />

repres<strong>en</strong>tation; charting the history<br />

of tourism; maps and mapping; domestic<br />

locations and dislocations; real<br />

and imagined topographies; i<strong>de</strong>ntities<br />

of place; foreignness; consuming cultures;<br />

tourism, eating, and shopping.<br />
