the German practice had a lot in
common with the French tradition.
During the inter-war period and
the 1950s ideas of environmentally
sensitive forestry were common.
The best known representative
of this forestry ethic was Professor
Mark Anderson. He saw the
forests as ‘living communities’.
Anderson’s ideas were not unique
but he is hardly recognised as a
man of his times due to the rational
system of forestry economics that
was introduced in the 1960s. This
development had a profound environmental
impact on the landscape
and worked like a distorting lens
obscuring the roots of environmentally
sensitive forestry. However, the
tradition of environmentally sensitive
forestry survived throughout
the 1960s and 1970s due to the
deep-rooted environmental tradition
shared by many foresters. The
recent reawakening of environmentally
sensitive forestry can be firmly
attributed to its 19th century roots.
We can now recognise the present
interest in the native and natural
forests of Britain as a long-standing
tradition.
SHOT interest group: nature &
technology
We are interested in organizing a
special interest group within the
Society for the History of Technology
for scholars working on topics
related to “nature and technology,”
broadly construed. We hope to
have the first meeting at the 2000
SHOT conference in Munich next
August and perhaps start an online
community as well.
‘Documenting Environmental
Change’
The project ‘Documenting Environmental
Change’ arose out of
a colloquium held at Clare Hall
College, Cambridge, under the
auspices of the Centre for History
and Economics, King’s College, on
15 September 1999. The meeting
brought together a broad spectrum
of people working in the fields of
geography, history, archaeology,
historical climatology, literature,
anthropology and political science,
to exchange information about
their work and examine the possibilities
of future interdisciplinary
co-operation in the study of historical
environmental change. ‘Environmental
History’, or the study
of environmental change in past
time, has since its inception incorporated
methods from a variety of
disciplines; History and geography
are perhaps the most prominent
of these, but they must be ranged
alongside ecology (especially landscape
ecology), botany, climatology,
anthroplogy, archaeology, and the
history and philosophy of science.
Those disciplines concentrating on
‘natural resource data’ such as pollen
records, sedimentation history
or dendrochronologies have been
able to provide remarkably accurate
