Symposium structure
The symposium will be a mixture
of plenary sessions giving state-ofthe-art
reviews by highly qualified
keynote speakers, and horizontal,
problem solving sessions with offered
research papers and posters.

Call for papers
Those wishing to give an oral or a
poster presentation at the symposium
should submit an abstract of
max. 200 words in one paragraph
to the conference registrar by 28
February 2001. Abstracts should be
preferably submitted as email attachments
in the following format:

A sample abstract with the correct
layout can be found on the conference
web site. Oral and poster presentations
will be given equal consideration,
and abstracts of both will be published
in the abstracts book. The abstracts
will be subject to review by the
Scientific Programme Committee.
Key outputs
The keynote papers and selected
research papers (subject to review)
will be published in a special edition
of Fennia, the international
journal of the Geographical Society
of Finland.

Registration fee
The cost of the symposium is 110
Euro per person, 45 Euro for students,
for registrations received
before 28 February, and 130/50
Euro respectively thereafter. The fee
includes access to all symposium, a
delegate’s bag including the documentation,
and morning/ afternoon
refreshments during the meeting. A
separate fee will be incurred for the
conference dinner and the post-symposium
excursion.
Please note: A refund less 15% is
possible if cancelling before 15 April
2001. If cancelling before 15 May
2001, a refund of 50% will be paid.
No refund will be paid for cancellations
after 15 May 2001.

A wide range of hotels and guesthouses
will be available in Turku
depending on requirements. Hotel
rates include breakfast and start
from approximately 40 per night.

Excursions
A one-day post-symposium excursion
by ship has been arranged to the
Southwestern Archipelago and the
Field Station of the Archipelago Research
Institute on the island of Seili
(Själö) on Saturday 9 June. Places are
limited and a charge of Euro 45/30
will be made, which includes lunch.
On the way to Seili visitors will see
parts of the spectacular archipelago,
which consists of more than 30 000
islands and skerries stretching between
mainland Finland and Åland.
At the Research Station, visitors will
have the opportunity to hear about
the fascinating history of the island
dating back to 17th century serving
as a leprosy hospital and later, a
mental hospital. Visitors will learn
about the research undertaken on
the Baltic Sea and the nearby Archipelago
Biosphere Area. Please indicate
on the registration form if you
are interested in this excursion.

Registration will commence on
Tuesday 5 June 2001 (at16.00-
19.00 hrs) at the University. Registration
and info desk will be open
throughout the symposium. The
symposium sessions will start in the
morning of Wednesday 6 June.
