ABSTRACT<br />

This study named as, “The No<strong>ve</strong>l Adaptations For Cinema and Television<br />

and the Changing Language of Narration” includes the modifications appearing<br />

during the adaptation process of literary works for cinema- television and the<br />

difficulties of adaptation. The films adapted from no<strong>ve</strong>ls, works always lead to a<br />

large number of debates both within the worlds of cinema and literature and among<br />

the readers and audiences. The evaluation of such films mostly includes the<br />

comparison of the film adapted and the literary work from which it is adapted.<br />

This study mainly has two aims. First, it intends to expose the realization of<br />

the adaptation process of the literary works in general and of the no<strong>ve</strong>ls in particular,<br />

into another le<strong>ve</strong>l of narration and the modifications appearing in the language of<br />

narration through putting an emphasis on the theoretical aspects of the subject.<br />

Second, it aims to elucidate the matter of loyalty through focusing on the criticisms<br />

raised against the films adapted from literary works, particularly no<strong>ve</strong>ls whether they<br />

are loyal to the no<strong>ve</strong>ls from which they are adapted or not.<br />

Moreo<strong>ve</strong>r, the relation of television and literature, particularly the film and<br />

the no<strong>ve</strong>l; the interaction, similarities and differences of these two mediums of<br />

communication; the definitions and difficulties of adaptation; the approaches to<br />

adaptation and the differences between adaptation-translation and inspiration are<br />

touched upon in the body of this thesis. The last but not the least, the birth of no<strong>ve</strong>l<br />

and cinema both around the world and in Turkey are also mentioned briefly.<br />
