We were again privileged to enjoy the warm coqperation and collegiality ofthe Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and its Director, Mr. ılhan Temizsoy. Mr. Temizsoyretired in 2001 from his office, after a long and distinguished career as leader ofone of the foremost museums in the world. Gordion was fortunate to assume a specialplace in his interests and has profited immensely from his good works. It has beenan honor, a privilege, and a pleasure to work with Mr. Temizsoy.The 2001 season would not ha<strong>ve</strong> been successful without the good will and assistanceof our go<strong>ve</strong>mment representati<strong>ve</strong>s. Mr. Vahap Kaya ser<strong>ve</strong>d as representati<strong>ve</strong>for excavation, site conservation, and museum activities until mid-season, when Mr.Mehmet Akalın took his place. Mr. Sadık Doğan ser<strong>ve</strong>d as go<strong>ve</strong>mment representati<strong>ve</strong>for the Gordion Regional Sur<strong>ve</strong>y. We are most grateful to aLi three individuals for theiroutstanding service, their helpfulness, and the good cheer that each brought to his assignment.As in past years, the 2001 season at Gordion was conducted under the auspicesof the Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (JeremySabloff, Director), with the continuing cooperation of the Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity of North Carolinaat Chapel Hill, the College of William and Mary, and Santa Clara Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity. Majorfunding for the 2001 season was provided by the Uni<strong>ve</strong>rsity of Pennsylvania, theNational Science Foundation, and generous private donors.The 2001 season commenced on June 8 and continued until August 13. Theprincipal activities were as follows: 1.) excavation; 2.) regional sur<strong>ve</strong>y; 3.) architecturalconservation; 4.) object conservation; and 5.) research.1. EXCAVATIONProfessor Mary M. Voigt has provided the following reports on excavation andregional sur<strong>ve</strong>y, which were carried out under her directian.This was a transitional year for archaeological field research at Gordion, with limitedexcavation in preparation for the 2002 season, which will focus on the Late Hellenisticoccupation.
