EXCAVATIONS AT şAvi HÖVÜK 2000-2001Reinhard D/TTMANN*After a short survey campaign at Şavi Höyük in 1999 1 the Turkish authorities gavethe permission to a smail team of the Westfalische-Wilhelms-University/Münster toconduct excavations at the site in cooperation with the museum of Şanlıurfa. We wouldlike to thank in this respect the Director General of Monuments and Museums Dr.Alpay Pasinli for his permission and unbureaucratic support - as well as Eyüp Bucak, director of the museum of Şanlıurfa for advise and enormous help. Our thanks go alsoto Mehmet Ozdoğan, Marcella Frangipane and our representatives Celal Ozdemir, OghaArslan, Yasemin Kösekul and Ayhan Satlık for their precious help and advice. Lastnot least we would like to thank the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the financialsupport.Today we know of at least 7 archaeological sites in the eastarn vicinity of the modernviiiage of Adacık, province Şanlıurfa, situated about 11 km. to the south of Birecik,on the eastern border of the Euphrates (Fig. 1). The sites are numbered Şavi i to Viifrom south to north. Excavations took place at Şavi i in 2000 and 2001 and at Şavi iiin 2000. The rest of the sites have been surveyed in 2000 2 . Due to the shortage of spacei would like to present the results only briefly and in chronological order:The oldest remains have been found at Şavi ii and date to the Palaeolithic period.Similar finds have also been made at the site by a Turkish team under the leadershipof Harun Taşkıran and Metin Kartal in 1999 3 .So far no Aceramic- or early Ceramic-Neolithic material has been found at leastin our survey-area.A smail thoios, dating to the Iate Halaf period with some interesting local (?)sherds has been found just on virgin soil at Şavi II, Sondage B (measuring 5x10 m.).(Figs. 2, 3; Figs. 3, 1-3).A gap separates this from mud brick fragments, which were much destroyed byrecent ploughing activities. The walls belong probably to what is called a "Mittelsaalhaus"in German, that means a tripartite structure of the Late Uruk period. (Fig. 2, 2) Thislevel again is disturbed by several graves of the Initial Early Bronze Age and an equallyfragmentary preserved structure of the same age (Fig. 2, 1). Settlement activitiesstopped than at Şavi ii.Prof. Dr. Reinhard DITTMANN, Institut für Altorientalische Philologie und Vorderasiatische Altertumskunde, Rosenstrasse9, 48143 Münster/GERMANY.For the results of the survey in 1999 see: R.
