covered in a double layer of plaster and in fragments of earthenware paste. Subsequently, the original design of the pool was partially altered: the west apse was removedwith the construction of three new steps, built in limestone blocks and brick and arrangedin an L-shape, perhaps to make it easier to descend into to the pool (Fig. 3).Theoutflow of water was via a fistula: we can stili see the point at which it was built into thelowest step on the west side, but it is not e1ear where the supply point was.The basin must have been enriched on the outside by a colonnade, as suggestedboth by the broad fragments of column shafts and fine Corinthian capital found inthe infiII of the pool, and, in particular, by the presence in situ of four plinths upon whichthe bases of the columns rested and the imprint of a fifth on the north side. On threesides, the room exhibits a fine mosaic pavement in black on a white background, in agood state of conservation, decorated with hexagons alternating with diamonds. Eachof the hexagons contains asmall, stylized flower. The design is framed around the edgesby a double black-and-white band. The external walls of the frigidarium are badly conserved in elevation, especiallythe west wall, which appears razed down to foundation level. On the north side, lrıvestigationswere limited by the unstable conditions of one of the bastions of the harbourwall, the partial collapse of which has covered the north wall of the room. The reinforcementof this stretch of the walls and the subsequent removal of the collapsed material, which are to be undertaken during the next campaign, will make it possible tocomplete investigation of the north sector and to define the chronological relations betweenthe baths and the walls of the harbour front. Unlike the building's other rooms, which all had barrel-vaulted ceilings, the ceiling of the frigidarium must have been fiat, possibly of tiles resting upon wooden beams. This hypothesis appears to be endorsedin particular by the absence of large structure collapses in this sector. The frigidariumcommunicated with the tepidarium to the south, via a door; the entrance from the outsidehas not yet been found, though it may have been on the north side.In the south area at the opposite end, the removal of layers of earth from the surfacerevealed some masonry structures exhibiting signs of alterations, extensions andrestructuring, bearing witness to the complex's various phases of life. A particularly interestingsituation emerged in the eastern part of the area, which turned out to have aninfiII of thick layers of ash and charred remains, alternating with levels of earth andsmail stones (the layers measuring 50cm.), directly over the levelled rock floor. Datafrom the study of the ceramic material found here and analysis of the samples of ashand charred remains will provide information as to chronology and to the nature andorigin of the deposits. However, it seems fairly evident that they might be attributed toa phase subsequent to that of the baths, perhaps linked to the craft workshops whichwere set up in the complex in Late Antiquity, and probably traceable to the phase of Iateoccupation of the praefurnium (Fig. 4)These investigations made it possible to almost reconstruct the lay-out of theHarbour Baths, the central nucleus of which e1early consisted of a double row of adjoiningrooms, arranged on a north-south axis, the first built up against the rock wall ofthe promontory, the second to the immediate west of this. Standing completely apartfrom this scheme are the frigidarium, to the north, and the room uncovered on the oppositesouth side. The original function of this latter room is hard to define: as we havesaid, it must have changed over the course of time; it may well have been a serviceroom, linked to the functioning of the praefurnium ; however the part of the praefurniumdating back to the time of the bath is full of layers of infiII which have yet to be investigated. At the same time, investigation was extended to the south-west area of the harbourbasin, with the total removal of the deposit of surface sand (mixed with pieces ofcollapsed wall, smail blocks of stone and pieces of earthenware and glass) stili presentalong the walls of the promontory. The exeavation revealed the pattern and features ofthe masonry structures of the harbour front (in opus quadratum) and also concerned438
