12th International Scientific Conference, April 20-22, 2009 Brno, Czech Republic 91TYPE OF TRAM CAR AS A PARAMETER AFFECTINGTHE LEVEL OF NOISEEva PanulinováThe emissions of means of transport are natural concomitants of their everyday operation.Mostly, they have an adverse effect on both the environment and humans. Means oftransport are among the main sources of emissions, where, in towns, cars and tramsprevail.Because excessive noise affects town residents, it is important to monitor and analysenoise emissions caused by tram transport. An analysis of the influence of the type of tramon the resulting noise level, which is the subject of the paper presented, may be of someassistance in this respect.Measurements carried out on straight panel tram tracks were analysed statistically.IntroductionTraffic based noise pollution in urban areas has become a major environmental problem for bigcities. The many statistics study showed that 80% of sound energy is resulted from traffic noise.Means of transport are among the main sources of emissions, where, in towns, cars and tramsprevail. It is important to monitor and analyse noise emissions caused by tram transport. Noise isalso classed as a harmful emission, which is caused, in the event of tramway transport, by therunning of the tram car motor, the rolling of the wheel on the rail, and by the aerodynamic noise ofthe tram body that becomes evident only at high velocities. As has been mentioned above, one of the main sources of noise is a tram car. Different types oftrams cause different noise levels. Therefore, this paper focuses on the evaluation of the effects of agiven tram car on the resulting noise level.Tram car as a source of noiseTram car noise may be caused by the car body, motor, the load it carries, the style of driving, the number of cars in the tram unit/train, the intensity of tram traffic, the tram velocity, type, thetechnical condition of the tram, continuous or interrupted traffic flow with crossroads, stops andshort-radius curves in tramway systems and the acceleration and deceleration/braking of the tramcar. All measurements monitoring the problem in question were carried out in the city of Košice ontramways operated by Dopravný podnik mesta Košice, a.s. (DPMK a.s.). The organisation operates128 tram cars of three types: ČKD T3, ČKD T6A5 and ČKD KT8D5. The percentage of individualtram types in Košice on December 31, 2008 is shown in Figure 1.Ing.
