Dette empirisk baserede speciale er en introduktion til den cubanske timbastil, som opstod i starten af
1990erne på Cuba. På basis af feltstudier i Havanna og København præsenterer, analyserer og diskuterer jeg
timbastilen, og opstiller en række fortolkningsmuligheder med det formål at definere stilen og dens mange
betydninger. Et centralt spørgsmål er, hvorvidt timba kan klassificeres som en selvstændig musikalsk
kategori, der adskiller sig markant fra den latinamerikanske salsa. Jeg præsenterer de mest indflydelsesrige
cubanske danseorkestre i perioden 1969-2001 med henblik på at sætte timbastilen ind i et historisk
perspektiv, og jeg definerer dens mest karakteristiske stiltræk. Jeg beskæftiger mig desuden med den
cubanske dansekultur, og præsenterer danseformerne casino og despelote set i forhold til timbastilen.
Endelig diskuterer jeg musikkens rolle og betydning i det cubanske samfund i 1990erne, som var en periode
med store sociale omvæltninger.

This thesis is an introduction to the Cuban timba style, which was established in the early 1990s in Cuba. On
the basis of field studies in Havana and Copenhagen I present, analyse and discuss the timba style. With the
purpose of defining the style and its many meanings I establish a number of possible interpretations. A key
question raised, is whether timba can be classified as an independent musical category, which differs
significantly from salsa. Furthermore I present the most influential groups in the period 1969 - 2001 in an
attempt to place the style into a historical context and I define the most characteristic traits of the style. I
address the Cuban dance culture and present the dance forms casino and despelote in relation to the timba
style. Finally I discuss the role and significance of the music in the Cuban society in the 1990s, a period with
great social changes.
