It’s not clear how costs will be divided between Aventis, the seed<br />
companies who licensed the StarLink technology and insurers for<br />
everybody involved.<br />
In October 2001, Aventis announced plans to divest its CropScience<br />
Division and to sell it to Bayer. The deal was approved by the<br />
European Commission in April 2002. 207<br />
Companies, farmers and consumers outside the USA have not been<br />
compensated. Without an international instrument on corporate<br />
accountability and liability it is for non-OECD countries (e.g. in Africa<br />
or Asia) to make Aventis liable for any harm caused by the StarLink<br />
maize.<br />
