Some people reject the notion of “types” or “styles.” Putt<strong>in</strong>g people<br />

<strong>in</strong> boxes, they say, is not the way to really get to know one another.<br />

Instead, they contend, that’s stereotyp<strong>in</strong>g, a process that may be unfair<br />

to the <strong>in</strong>dividual and uses unrealistic shortcuts to appreciat<strong>in</strong>g unique<br />

human be<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Understand<strong>in</strong>g someone’s behavioral style is not mutually exclusive<br />

with genu<strong>in</strong>ely gett<strong>in</strong>g to know them. Far from it. In fact, us<strong>in</strong>g People<br />

Smart can greatly accelerate that process. If you can quickly notice<br />

another person’s needs-based cues and adapt your own behavior, you<br />

will learn to value others more genu<strong>in</strong>ely. You will see that their needs<br />

are just as valid as yours are, and you can, if you choose, seek to meet<br />

those desires and forge a deeper relationship.<br />

Not manipulation<br />

Another important po<strong>in</strong>t: When we talk about us<strong>in</strong>g People Smart,<br />

we are not talk<strong>in</strong>g about manipulat<strong>in</strong>g people! Rather, we are talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about learn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> a way, to speak their language.<br />

It is not considered manipulative to speak French when <strong>in</strong> Paris,<br />

for example. Au contraire. It’s someth<strong>in</strong>g you do briefl y while on the<br />

Frenchman’s soil so you can be more compatible. You do not alter your<br />

basic nature while <strong>in</strong> France. Your ideas do not change. However, how<br />

you present those ideas does change.<br />

Similarly, practic<strong>in</strong>g People Smart does not fundamentally change<br />

you or the other person. It empowers you by mak<strong>in</strong>g you multil<strong>in</strong>gual,<br />

<strong>in</strong> a sense. Know<strong>in</strong>g how to listen and speak <strong>in</strong> the “language” of those<br />

around you is a delightful, useful tool that can be used to resolve differences,<br />

maximize strengths, and enjoy a fuller, more successful life<br />

by better understand<strong>in</strong>g yourself and the people around you.<br />
