Be the Master of Your Unspoken Message<br />
Have you ever allowed your eyelids to droop at a conference, made<br />
jarr<strong>in</strong>g hand motions <strong>in</strong> a boardroom meet<strong>in</strong>g, delivered a podium<br />
address with weak vocal <strong>in</strong>tonation... and not even been aware of it?<br />
Did you know that what you don’t say can have a great aff ect on how<br />
everyone perceives you?<br />

For example, an employee enters your offi ce, shoulders slouched,<br />
body rigid, and sits down with his arms and legs crossed. His lips<br />

Th e way you communicate nonverbally is responsible for 90 percent<br />
of what people th<strong>in</strong>k of you. It’s the diff erence between be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
considered weak or powerful, unsure or confi dent, <strong>in</strong>secure or ready<br />
to take on the world. You could use authoritative words, have excellent<br />
listen<strong>in</strong>g skills, or be an expert with feedback, but if you don’t<br />
understand nonverbal communication, your communication and<br />
ability to detect what others are communicat<strong>in</strong>g is not as eff ective<br />
as it should be.<br />
