Direct people are faster paced, more assertive, and more competitive.<br />
At worst, these tendencies can transform <strong>in</strong>to hast<strong>in</strong>ess, combativeness,<br />
or lower awareness of others’ needs. More outspoken,<br />
talkative, and dom<strong>in</strong>ant, Direct people are extroverts who focus their<br />
attention on <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> their environment. In other words—action!<br />
Th ey tend to work and play faster. When at a social gather<strong>in</strong>g, they’re<br />
the ones who <strong>in</strong>troduce themselves as a natural way of seek<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>fl<br />
uence others <strong>in</strong> their surround<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Th ey prefer to make rapid decisions, becom<strong>in</strong>g impatient when<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs don’t move fast enough or don’t go their way. Check<strong>in</strong>g for errors<br />
is someth<strong>in</strong>g other people can do. It’s too time-consum<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
self-<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g for Direct people. Instead of check<strong>in</strong>g, they busily rush<br />
<strong>in</strong>to new areas where the more Indirect may fear to tread. In fact, they<br />
rush <strong>in</strong>to so many new areas that their time seems to evaporate <strong>in</strong>to<br />
th<strong>in</strong> air. Th at’s one reason why they have diffi culty consistently be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
prompt—because someth<strong>in</strong>g comes up at the offi ce or somewhere else.<br />
Meanwhile, their more punctual, Indirect friends learn to busy themselves<br />
with time killers, such as projects or magaz<strong>in</strong>es, while wait<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for their more easily sidetracked companions.<br />
Direct people may enjoy risks and want results now, or yesterday.<br />
Risks are a way of life with them. Not only are they less worried about<br />
rock<strong>in</strong>g the boat, they’ll oft en tip it over and splash around <strong>in</strong> the hot<br />
water they fi nd themselves <strong>in</strong>. Th ey crave excitement, so they do as<br />
much as possible to get it.<br />
Th is type feels that if they throw enough aga<strong>in</strong>st the wall, someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
has to stick. Who cares if the output isn’t perfect! Quantity beats<br />
quality (with<strong>in</strong> limits known only to them) most days of the week. So<br />
they’re likely to tolerate a higher error rate than their Indirect counterparts<br />
to ga<strong>in</strong> a higher number of trial opportunities, even if their<br />
