Figure 83 and Figure 84 present the output<br />
per working unit vs. surface used per working<br />
unit for cocoa and coffee, respectively. The<br />
majority of cocoa growers (with around 10 acres<br />
per working unit) reach an average productivity<br />
level that is only one fourth of what top<br />
performers achieve in this region of the cocoa<br />
production (i.e. a difference of 20 bags vs. 80<br />
bags per working unit). A similar situation occurs<br />
in the case of coffee growers where the majority<br />
reaches only one third of the productivity level of<br />
observed best performers. Cocoa and coffee trees<br />
require initial maturity periods before they can be<br />
harvested. The latter may explain the situation of<br />
some growers reporting no output of these crops.
