Steve had tried three different stem cell procedures in the country of Mexico, in hopes ofreversing or slowing the progression of the disease, but had little results. A shoulder injury during a Cincinnati Reds tryout camp ended his baseball aspirations. In 1983 he joined the U.S. Air Force, being stationed at Lackland, Keesler and Grissom AFBs, and played basketball for thetraveling base team. After his stint in the military, he became a civil service employee from 1987 to 2001, working in the roadsand grounds division at Grissom AFB, until the base was downsized. His individual achievements included numerous home run, runsbatted in, on base percentage and hits awards, including being referred to as the "reincarnation of Willie Mays" in a local sportsarticle, after having had 29 hits in 32 plate appearances during a Haynes-Apperson softball tournament in Kokomo. In 2008,Steve was given the highest individual honor for softball, by being voted into the Indiana Softball ASA Hall of Fame. But evenwith all of the accolades and accomplishments, Steve’s biggest and most cherished honor was being asked to throw out the firstpitch for the inaugural season of the Challenger Division of the Peru Little League, which offers special needs children theopportunity to play baseball in a league environment.
