Peru Tribune, The (IN) - Thursday, June 2, 2011Eugene Martin broke the shackles of his infirmity on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. He was privileged to have over 88 years tospend with his family, in South Paris, Maine, where he lived until he joined the war effort during World War II and then inKokomo and Miami, where he and his wife Bercie gave life to seven children. He met the former Bercie Wood when he was asoldier – a young man from Maine and a young lady from Kentucky made an unlikely couple. They fell in love, were wed inJanuary 1944 and moved to Kokomo. As with many young couples, they moved several times, including two stints in Maine.Their children are Leona (Frank) Mims, Betty Jean Martin, deceased, Eddie Martin, deceased, Randy (Rita) Martin, John(Cyndy) Martin, David Martin, deceased, and Sherry (Bob) Kreag. They took their parenting very seriously and cared for thekids, come what may. Vacations consisted of visits to see family in South Paris and Norway, Maine. Family there includedpercy, who survives. Those who have passed include brother Eddie and sisters Esther Merrill, Grace Martin, Mary Reed, JunePiirainen and Dorothy Witham. Through their children came a much larger clan, including grandchildren Amy (Joe) Lyon,Andrew (Ashley) Mims, Rachel Mrtin, Rebekah (Brad) Dunlap, Ty (Ashley) Martin, Christy Martin, Hannah (Josh) Hunley,Logan Kreag and Amber (Jared) Lange. The great grandchildren are Amanda, Caleb, Jayden, Carly, Kyaleigh, Blake, Trevor,Cameron, Bailey, Mason, Maddox, Molly, Cash (who preceded in death) and Jacy. Gene retired from Delco Electronics andfilled his time with a garden and puttering in the garage. He was partial to 1920s and 1930s models and wanted them to drive, not look at. He was equally at home in the garage or on a lawn chair under the shade tree. He shared that shade, and everythingelse, with Bercie until her death in 2001. Later in life, he accepted the Lord and became a faithful attendee at the then TrinityBaptist Church, now called Steps of Faith Community Church. There he perfected his mischievous little grin and winningpersonality. He became that sweet little old man that most people just love to be around. This led to one of his favorite hobbies, collecting hugs. He was hobbled in his later years with COPD, yet never took for granted the love of his family, immediateand extended. He was joined in his journey toward victory by the wonderful people of Guardian Angel Hospice. They broughtthe expertise that was expected but they brought much more. The family thanks especially Lori and Lynn for helping them dealwith Dad’s final hours. The family was also greatly assisted by Brandon and Jeannie, who helped to provide round the clockcare. He was greatly blessed with the friendship of Lynn McKinney of Peru. The family encourages that those who wishconsider a gift to either Guardian Angel Hospice or Steps of Faith Community Church, Peru, in lieu of flowers.
