Third St. Memorials may be made to Bruce Lennon for a special fund.<strong>Peru</strong> <strong>Tribune</strong>, The (IN) - Thursday, January 6, <strong>2011</strong>Steve Finicle, 51, passed away on Jan. 3, <strong>2011</strong> at Dukes Memorial Hospital in <strong>Peru</strong> after a lengthy and very courageous battlewith ALS / Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Steve had tried three different stem cell procedures in the country of Mexico, in hopes ofreversing or slowing the progression of the disease, but had little results. He was a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed andtreated for stomach cancer in 1997. Steve was born Oct. 16, 1959, to Ronald and Inge Mogler Finicle, both of whom precededhim in death. He was a 1978 graduate of <strong>Peru</strong> High School, where he was involved in football and baseball. He continued hisathletic ambitions at Otero Junior College in LaJuanta, Colo., where he excelled as a baseball pitcher, having been named tothree All-Tournament teams in two years and was scouted by several Major League baseball teams, including the Cubs, Reds,White Sox and Braves. A shoulder injury during a Cincinnati Reds tryout camp ended his baseball aspirations.In 1983 he joined the U.S. Air Force, being stationed at Lackland, Keesler and Grissom AFBs, and played basketball for thetraveling base team. After his stint in the military, he became a civil service employee from 1987 to 2001, working in the roadsand grounds division at Grissom AFB, until the base was downsized. He continued employment at Grissom with SateliteServices, until joining his final employer, Data Monitoring Systems, where he worked until 2007 when the disease took over.During this time, Steve also coached at <strong>Peru</strong> High School for the girl's JV softball team, and the girl's freshman and JVbasketball teams over a six-year period. While coaching the girl's freshman basketball team, he became the first coach to leadthe team to an undefeated season, including a thrilling double-overtime victory over a Maconaquah squad that was previouslyunbeaten. Steve also served as an IHSAA girls basketball official for 11 years, as well as a youth baseball and softball umpirefor nine years. Steve was also a big fan of Purdue University athletics, the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and the IndianapolisColts. Steve was also an avid softball player -- playing from 1980 until 2005. He played on numerous teams in central Indiana,as well as on traveling teams that played in dozens of states across the country. His teams won countless league titles,Tournament titles and four Indiana state tournament titles. His individual achievements included numerous home run, runsbatted in, on base percentage and hits awards, including being referred to as the "reincarnation of Willie Mays" in a local sportsarticle, after having had 29 hits in 32 plate appearances during a Haynes-Apperson softball tournament in Kokomo. In 2008,Steve was given the highest individual honor for softball, by being voted into the Indiana Softball ASA Hall of Fame. But evenwith all of the accolades and accomplishments, Steve’s biggest and most cherished honor was being asked to throw out the firstpitch for the inaugural season of the Challenger Division of the <strong>Peru</strong> Little League, which offers special needs children theopportunity to play baseball in a league environment. He referred to this as one of his proudest moments. Steve is survived byhis daughter, Krysten, and son Austin of <strong>Peru</strong>. Also by his brother Tom and wife Mary of Wabash, brother Rob and wifeAshlee of Kokomo, and sister Debbie of Sarasota, Fla., nephews Ryan, Ryne, Andrew and Jeffrey, and nieces Brittany, Karleeand Danielle. Special acknowledgement goes to his nephew Stefan, and Stefan's girlfriend Samantha Caldwell, for all of thecare and comfort they brought to Steve throughout the duration of his illness. Steve's request to be cremated will be honored.Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday at Flowers-Leedy FuneralHome in <strong>Peru</strong>. She wasborn in Marion on Aug. 22, 1920 to Elmus and Anna (Kiger) Flemming. She married Verlin “Bud” Oldfather on Jan. 4, 1937,and he preceded her in death. Thelma was a member of the Miami United Methodist Church, and worked for Hooks DrugStores. She lived the last 74 years of her life as a resident of Miami. She enjoyed astrology, flowers and bird watching. Thelmais survived by her sons, Verlin (wife Carolyn) Oldfather, Oaklandon, Brad L. Oldfather, Kokomo, Chad D. (wife Laura “AJ”)Oldfather, Garland, Texas; grandchildren, Robin Medon (husband Craig), Kristina Mayon (husband Robert), Amber White(husband Jamie), Aaron Oldfather, Crystal Stogher, Staci Sweares (husband Lee), Heather Catron (companion Scott Plough),and Jason Catron; two step grandchildren, Kaylynn Swears, and Leslie Johnson (husband Bradley); and great-grandchildren,Robert Mayon II, Mathew Medon, Sarah Medon, Andrew Catron, Ariana Sweares, Meaira Ridehour, Madisyn White, MaloreyWhite and Kash Carter French. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Ardella Harper, MaritaPower, Phyllis Zollman; and one brother, Durwood Flemming. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at AllenFuneral Home, 136 S. Elm St., Bunker Hill, with Pastor Larry Zehring officiating. Burial will be at the Galveston Cemetery,Galveston. She married Raymond E. Weller at the ChiliMethodist Church on Nov. 19, 1955; he passed away Sept. 14, 2007. Barbara was a 1952 graduate of Chili High School.
