Maharishi (1988) notes that “when thinking isalways spontaneously evolutionary then there is Heaven for everyone”(p. 1), while in the Rāmāyaṇ everyone was described as happy and fulfilled,living in accord with Dharma:[pú¢muidto lokStu¢" pu¢" su/imRk"inr;myo çrogÄ dui.R=.yvijRt"172
Ideal Government in the Vålm⁄ki RåmåyaÔPrahԆishtamudito lokas tushtaԝ pushtaԝ sudharmikaԝnirāmayo hyarogash cha durbhikshabhayavarjitaԝ(Bāl Kāԗd, 1.1.90)(During the Reign of Rām) the people will be exceedinglyhappy, content, fulfilled, and will easily live in accord withDharma; they will be free of sickness, free from disease, andbereft of famine and fear.These descriptions of life in Ayodhyā provide us with a thorough andbeautiful documentation of a heavenly, fulfilling life for every citizen,a civilization worthy of being called “Heaven on Earth.” It is difficultto imagine such an exalted state of life, for suffering and weaknesshave plagued the world throughout recorded history. Accordingly,scholars generally discount the descriptions of Rām Rāj as the flightsof fancy of an ancient poet; the notion of a perfect civilization seemsfarfetched, in part because of the seemingly impossible task of satisfyingevery citizen’s needs and desires, as well as from the apparent weaknessesof human life. However, Maharishi’s monumental contributionof his Absolute Theory of Government provides an empirically verifiedframework for bringing about such an age in a relatively short time. Byassembling groups of Yogic Flyers numbering the square root of onepercent of its population, any nation can enjoy a prevention-oriented,problem-free government, which will secure prosperity and progressfor every citizen for all time.Summary and ConclusionThis paper has examined several key principles of Maharishi’s AbsoluteTheory of Government, and illustrated how they are expressed in the textof the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇ. It has shown how Maharishi’s depiction ofnature’s administration—fully awake self-referral consciousness—correspondswith the descriptions of the Rāmāyaṇ’s central hero, Rām.It has further demonstrated how the Rāmāyaṇ portrays Rām as theSelf of everyone, the embodiment of bliss, established beyond time andspace, upholding and nourishing everyone and everything.We have also seen that the Rāmāyaṇ shows how nature’s governmentis available to human awareness, and how through the Vedic technolo-173
