consciousness-based education and govermentIn our own time, Maharishi has brought to light the knowledge ofthis ancient science and integrated it with the modern sciences in sucha way that Vedic science and modern science are now seen as complementarymethods of gaining knowledge of the same reality—theunified field of all the laws of nature. The knowledge of this ancientscience that Maharishi has brought to light is known as MaharishiVedic Science.Maharishi Vedic Science is to be understood, first of all, as a reliablemethod of gaining knowledge, as a science in the most completesense of the term. It relies upon experience as the sole basis of knowledge,not experience gained through the senses only, but experiencegained when the mind, becoming completely quiet, is identified withthe unified field. This method, examined in relation to the modern sciences,proves to be an effective means of exploring the unified field ofall the laws of nature. On the basis of this method, complete knowledgeof the unified field becomes possible. It is possible to know theunified field both subjectively on the level of direct experience throughexploration of consciousness and objectively through the investigativemethods of modern science. Maharishi Vedic Science gives completeknowledge of consciousness, or the knower, complete knowledge of theobject known, and complete knowledge of the process of knowing. Inknowing the unified field, all three—knower, known, and process ofknowing—are united in a single unified state of knowledge in whichthe three are one and the same.Maharishi has developed and made available a technology for thesystematic exploration of the unified field. This technology is a meansby which anyone can gain access to the unified field and explore itthrough experience of the simplest and most unified state of consciousness.As this domain of experience becomes universally accessible, theunified field becomes available as a direct experience that is a basis foruniversal knowledge. The technology for gaining access to the unifiedfield is called the Transcendental Meditation technique and itsadvanced programs, and the science based on this experience, whichlinks modern science and Maharishi Vedic Science in a single unifiedbody of knowledge, is called the Science of Creative Intelligence.Maharishi is deeply committed to applying the knowledge andtechnology of the unified field for the practical benefit of life. These applications of Maharishi’s technologies of consciousnesshave laid it open to empirical verification and demonstratedits practical benefit to mankind. Hundreds of scientific studies havealready established its usefulness. From these results, it is clear thatMaharishi’s technologies of consciousness are far more beneficial thantechnologies based on present day empirical science; they promise toreduce and even eliminate war, terrorism, crime, ill health, and allforms of human suffering.These technologies, which are the applied value of Maharishi VedicScience, represent a great advance in methods for gaining knowledge.Past science was based on a limited range of knowledge gained throughthe senses. This new technology opens to mankind a domain of experienceof a deeper and more far-reaching import. It places within ourgrasp a new source of discovery of laws of nature that far exceeds themethods of modern science, yet remains complementary to thesemethods.Modern science and Maharishi Vedic Science, explored together,constitute a radically new frontier of knowledge in the contemporaryworld, opening out vistas of what it is possible for mankind to know andto achieve, which extend far beyond present conceptions, and whichdemand a re-evaluation of current paradigms of reality and a reassessmentof old conceptions of the sources and limits of human knowledge.This introductory essay will provide a preliminary understanding ofwhat the unified field is, what Maharishi Vedic Science is, and howMaharishi Vedic Science and modern science are related. It also definesfundamental concepts and terminology that will be frequently used inthis journal and surveys the practical applications of this new technology.We begin with a description of the unified field as understood inmodern science.The Unified Field of Modern ScienceWithin the last few years, modern theoretical physics has identifiedand mathematically described a unified field at the basis of all observablestates of physical nature.
